Ok in September I took the decision not to apply for medicine entry 2011 but instead take a gap year and apply in 2012.

My reasons for doing this were that I had virtually no work exp. and so wouldn't really have stood a chance against the other applicants. I also hadn't had enough experience to make sure that I was 100% right for medicine.

I instead applied for science related courses starting 2011 incase when I did my WK EXP I decided that medicine wasn't for me.

My refereree (school guidance support teacher) wrote me a brilliant reference for this and I was wondering if it would still be valid when applying next year? And if not, who would I get to write my reference?

I would contact UCAS for a definitive answer, but I would imagine that you would need a new reference if you chose to apply again. It could be that your teacher could submit virtually the same one next year though

Regarding eligibility of your referee, if you aren't in school then you can get anyone you like to be your referee...so there is nothing stopping it being your former teacher

You will need to submit a new reference with your application next year, yes, it can't just be accessed from this years application. However, as has been said you can submit the exact same one as this year just entered on the 2012 entry form in the same way that you can submit the same personal statement as long as you attach this years application number to your application.

However, it would be sensible for the 2012 reference to reflect on your grades achieved in the summer as well as your plans for the coming year meaning you'd probably want to ask the referee to make some changes/additions to it even if they did include mostly the same content. Similarly, the reference this year was not written with a medicine application in mind meaning there will presumably be a lot more things your referee needs to include that are relevant to a vocational course that they didn't have to include this year.
