Are there any hard and fast rules with this?

Is it simply a case of submitting the essay you've obtained the highest mark in?

Depends on the programme you are applying for I suppose. Some of the universities I applied to required two essays, and I gave the last essay of my second year (on Romantic poetry) and the first essay of my third year (on contemporary literature), which had not actually been marked by the time I submitted my applications. Nevertheless, it just so happened that these were the two highest marks I had received at that point in time.

I wrote one especially, since I didn't have an existing one for the discipline I was applying to study. Brushed up another one from second year to send with it
