On television a few days back, someone mentioned that a white Christmas is only called that if it snows on the day. is that true. so if it snowed the day before and the snow still stuck by Christmas, it wouldn't be a white Christmas unless it snowed on the day?

I think that in the case of the betting industry, a "White Chriistmas" bet means that it will snow on the day.

Aside from that, the image that many people would understand as a white christmas is that it does in fact snow on the day.

That being said, if you wake up on Christmas day and the snow from the day before has left a covering, I'd be happy to call that a white christmas (but the bookies won't pay out)

Yep, it only 'officially' counts as a white Christmas if there's snow fall on Christmas day. It's meant to be snowing today in some places, and, to be honest, that's good enough for me
