Smoking and Weight

okay - I have just given up smoking  something which I'm v proud of, as I've been doing it far far too long!

Anyway, the one thing I am worried about is gaining weight. I've always (well, since I can remember) had issues with my weight. I'm fairly slim (size 8-10) now and I want to keep it this way -

BUT without the cigs I seem to be eating a lot more. I've not been a non-smoker for very long, so do you think this over-eating will tail off, as I get used to not smoking, or do you think the cigs were suppressing my appetite and I'll continue wolfing down everything I see?

I know this sounds very trival, but it's something that does genuninely upset me. :frown:

does anyone else have any giving up and weight gain advice/experiences they can share with me?

I dont have the same experience as you, so i cant really relate but ill try.
This extra eating maybe comfort eating, your body may have replaced it for the smoking. Congratulations on giving up the smoking, but know if you want to stay your current weight you should perhaps set yourself targets, maybe follow a diet. Im sure with enough self control you can keep your current weight. Try and eat healthily and exercise regularily and im sure you will be fine.
Good Luck :hugs:

Most smokers that kick the habbit suffer from weight gain because well to put it into an example instead of having a cup of tea and a cig you have a biscuit instead. But look at it this way which would you rather:

a: gain a little weight - Problem join a bloody gym

b: Screw up your body (mainly lungs) and die early and maybe quite painfully

I know which I would rather!
When I smoked I found that I was doing it when I was bored, or if I was a little hungry I'd have a cigarette instead of snacking. When I quit it suddenly seemed like there were so many times in a day I could just eat a little something, and I put on a bit of weight. My advice is to try and think of something else to do, maybe something distracting. Painting your nails is good (because then you can't do anything with your hands for a little while), or brushing your teeth, because then you wont want to eat anything for a while.

not helpful.

drink lots of water, stops you wanting to eat and tis a good detox, not wanting to swap one bad habit for another but I find coffee suppresses my appetite too.
"smoking is a mug's game" - yes, that's why I've given it up. any more insights you want to share? idiot.

Anyway, thanks to the rest of you that replied... I'll try them, esp. the doing something else with the hands and the water thing. Thanks people!
i used to find that sometimes smoking made me hungry!
what the others say is very true though.
however- i now find that excersise is so much easier now i can fill my lungs up with air properly. i'm also avoiding alcohol at the moment because my cravings get bad when i drink so that's saving me some calories. plus now im not smoking it's made me want to be healthier all round...so i think i'm definitely losing weight.
remember- it's not the lack of cigarettes directly that's making you gain weight. it's the fact that you are eating more- and you can control this with a little will power!

Good luck! I was the same last time I tried to quit and i started again :frown: Don't do that, as its been said, gaining a little bit of weight is definately the better deal!

Also, you'll be able to lose it again as soon as your metabolism sorts itself out, but don't get upset if you put a little bit of weight on - thik about how much worse you'd look with a hole in your throat and your legs cut off :hugs: good luck!
I actually found myself wanting to take up smoking (as much as i deteste it) so i could lose weight :frown:
Can't remember if this has been suggested, but chewing gum/mints might be an idea - you'll have something in your mouth that way, and the minty taste will put you off eating for a while when you've finished it (though for max. effect, if you prefer mints, go for the sort that are v. minty and take a long time to suck, like extra-strong ones.) Every time you feel like eating something, grab a mint instead.

Alternatively, if you actually want something to eat try not having any junk food in the house and buying a big bag of crunchy apples - that way if you succumb to a food craving at least it'll be fruit, which is healthy and not fattening. Plus crunchy apples are lovely and take a bit of time to eat, so you'll be less likely to go and eat something else.
Drinking water is good.. I try to do that instead of snacking

dont do it!! my mum suggested that as well, that she might take it up so she would lose weight, but it doesnt work imo, i know plenty of people who took it up for that reason and there no different to before they started

to the OP, have you tried lollipops?

it does work! you eat less cause you're more full.... and it cleans out your body of toxins. one friend went from a size 16 to a size 12 by drinking more water a day

Smoking suppresses food cravings as you can't taste food so well if you smoke. I have nothing more constructive to say - but follow everyone else's advice!
Well done on giving up!
