What accommodation is a good distance from the collegiate campus but also good distance from the city centre

Posted from TSR Mobile

This year i lived at Bramall Court. I think the online specification gives a bad impression of the accommodation but I've absolutely loved it here! Its one of the cheaper accommodations but has loads of car parking spaces and you're right next to London Road for cheaper food and close to collegiate and city campus. ASDA and Aldi are a five minute walk away and buses are frequent and only £1 anywhere too! most people there get en-suite rooms however i didn't but there were two bathrooms in my house and four of us lived there so it really wasn't a problem at all. Clean and modern with communal space. Would recommend to all.

I've been to Bramall Court a few times for pre-drinks and it seems like a really good little community going on there! A bit out of the way yes, but great vibes. Bramall 2015 link here - facebook.com/groups/BramallC2015

Anyone got an insight into what Leadmill Point is like social wise?

Hi I'm currently a Hallam student, will be returning in Sept for my fourth year, thought i'd give a bit of imput on some halls.

I stayed at Leadmill for both my first 2 years - both times with ensuite and i'm truely gutted i won't be there again this year! its not the largest or most modern of halls however it's very social and in an excellent location (leaving at 8.58am and making 9am lectures is a blessing!!). The kitchen/social area in the flat is large and the sofa/seats are actually a lot comfier than they look, they're easy to move around and make great beds for when friends stop over (easy to push into rooms too). the common room has recently been refurbed this year too so is a lot more modern now. One thing though, Leadmill club is opposite, if you're a light sleeper this may be annoying. i had rooms facing leadmill both years and never found it too much of an issue although i know some people who did.

Other accomodations:

Archways: This one is almost pat of Leadmill, they share the same enterance and reception. Very similar room layout to Leadmill, Archways isn't modern at all though, i have friends there at the moment and the floors, kitchen area and louge is very run down almost compared to other accommodations for the same price. again though great location and Archways has an enclosed courtyard with table tennis in the middle so seems very social

Liberty Court: These rooms are some of he nicest i've seen! you get loads of storage space - something others can lack. bathrooms all look really nice and kitchen is rather modern, also just round the corner from leadmill point so again 5minute walk to city campus. The building is an older converted building rather than purpose built so has more character to it. Downsides - social area in flats is only a kitchen, no lounge area, kitchens are fairly small so most socialising would have to be done in bedrooms. also, the laundry and common room, you have to leave the liberty court building, go out onto the main road and walk round to the liberty works entrance, these things have always put me off as otherwise liberty court would've been my first choice.

Exchange Works: This year has been refurbished. honestly this is the one i'm recommending! i've viewed the new rooms and they are brand new and shiny! no one will have lived in these rooms in this state before (no scratches or weird floor stains) also 3/4 beds, brand new living room/kitchens too with leather sofas. the common room has also been refurbed and theres an enclosed courtyard and table tennis, plus a study room. the location is also only a 5min walk from city campus, within walking distance from town/shops/clubs too but you won't have the noise of them at night. Unite (owner of exchange works) have sold all their rooms privately now, i'd expect this to be one of the most popular halls this year! view the unite website for new pics as the shu site theyre all old now and dont do it justice!

Opal 1/Fenton House: Visited for predrinks. These bedrooms are massive! you get so much more space than unite bedrooms, i think they're all ensuite too. the kitchen area didn't look the most modern however not at all run down. the location - opposite corp, great if you love rock/metal nights. location wise probably about a 10minute walk from city campus, close to west street so not far for clubs/bars, benefit being all previous ones you have to walk up hill on a night out!

Victoria Halls: Nicest looking Halls, never visited as i never knew anyone who managed to get a room there but i know most people do apply and its probably the most popular, just round the corner from opal one so good location for clubs/bars and about 10mins from city campus.

Central Quay: Never visited however half my seminar group in first year lived here! it seems to be the one most people don't apply for but end up getting to be honest. it's unite so fairly standard room. only complaint i ever heard people making was the distance from city campus and clubs... especially when wet and in winter! often though they'd club together for a taxi. its a massive halls so seems very social.

Anvil: Visited a few times. A lot smaller and quieter to other halls, more popular with second/third/fourth years. location is very good about 5/10min walk from city campus. again unite, so fairly standard bedroom wise. kitchens aren't the most modern however are still fairly modern and decent. leather sofas. wouldn't really be suitable if you wanted a really social halls.

Forge: visited a few times. Again like Central Quay, huge halls and very popular for first years, id say it's closer than central quay too about 10minute walk. id say it's a good all round halls for first year, not the most modern but then for what you get its decent price. seems very social and has a gym onsite. also close to Eccy road which is full of student pubs and shops, food places etc.

Pinnicles: Visited for predrinks and viewing properly with the view to live here next year. From when i visited seemed very modern kitchen and living area, leather sofas and if i remember correctly you get a tv include in the living area. rooms also seemed decent sized and modern. Location - no entirely sure, when walking to predrinks it was snowing and i wasnt wrapped up so didnt pay too much attention however i know for nights out you would need a taxi, city campus is about 10mins walk i think. Some people seem to think its the best halls, others think its too far out.

Triagon: Visited a few times. its Almost next to Leadmill Point so again great location. rooms didn't really have anything special about them, they have a lot of disabled rooms though and often these dont all get filled by disabled students, these rooms have a larger floor space. one thing noting with triagon though is they dont provide toaster, kettle, iron etc so as a flat (or indivually) you have to buy these items as well. kitchen/lounge from what i remember are fairly modern with leather sofas.

these are the main accomodations people go for/end up getting. bit long but hope it helps  in regards to collegiate campus i'd probably suggest the forge as i think that's the closest whilst being walkable to city centre and will still give you a good first year experience socially etc.

I have applied for accommodation and chose Victoria hall and Trigon. However I'm being told that Trigon is really far out the way for me as I'm studying at collegiate campus, does anybody have an opinion?

I don't suppose anyone here would know which halls are the most popular for those on BSc (Honours) Computer Science for Games course would you?

Hi,

You'd be best to choose the accommodation that you'd like to live in based on facilities, location and other things you think are important. We tend to mix our students up a bit in halls so that you have the opportunity to make friends with people other than those on your course

This means that there isn't a trend and students from any course can and do choose to live in a whole range of our halls.

Which halls are you thinking of going for?
