# Statistics - anomalies Watch

1. So I have been given a set of data that I need to analyse for a coursework. It's the blood pressures of the people in our year.
First task is to find out the mean of the data that I have, but I need to get rid of any possible outliers.
If i want to find if there's any anomalies, do I separate the data into two groups first: male and female and then work out the range that I want? Because the lower values are mostly from females whereas the higher are from males, so I thought it'd be wrong to do it all in one.

I don't think I've explained the above very well, but I hope you get it :P

Yes, that would be a good idea, for exactly the reason you've just stated. Make sure you explain this decision in the coursework, and that's some easy marks secured right there!

So eventhough I need to find the mean for the whole class (females and males), I should still separate the data, take out the anomalies and THEN work out the mean for the whole group?

Well if I was doing this statistical analysis "for real", then I wouldn't bother. But this is (I'm guessing) GCSE coursework we are talking about here, where all they want to see is a wide range of methods being used, along with some intelligent reasoning on what you're going to write about next (and why).
So you might as well just produce as many relevant graphs and stuff as possible, to keep the teachers happy.

You could do a load of calculations and graph drawing with the whole set of data, then say "Ah! But it would be better to separate out the males and females because _____", then go on to draw some more graphs and whatnot.
