Next year I'll be in London and I'll try to land a BB SA internship.
This year I have some months to do an internship, and I'm looking for something that will help me in the SA selection process next year.

My possibilities are limited, though. There is a chance I could work some months at Booz&Co, but if I don't get that internship I would probably end in Marketing at L'oreal. (which is a much sought experience here for those interested in marketing, but I couldn't care less about it).

So right now I'm sending off a lot of cold emails to really small PE shops, many of which specialize in SME deals. Mid size funds are out of my reach currently, but I might be able to secure a gig in one of these super-small ones.

Some of these shops have an AUM of 100 M, others have 5 or 10 M.
My big question is: would an internship in one of these have any value on my resume for BB recruiting next year? Or being so small am I better off with something completely unrelated to banking like the L'oreal program?

Banking is not a possibility currently because I don't want to apply this year just to be cut off from selection next year.

    What's your opinion?

Would small PE shops want you there for longer than two weeks max? Could you not possibly do both in your summer?

depending on what you want to do at the bank, they often do value "real world" i.e. industry experience.
i'd go for l'oreal. it does have quite a big brand name aswell, which is always good on a CV.
when folks look at your CV for 3 secs, they'll only read the names they recognize before possibly takign a closer look, and a no-name PE firm isn't one of them.

Why would it cut you off from selection next year?

A summer internship at L'oreal is better than a couple of weeks unpaid shadowing at a PE firm. It depends on the nature of each internship which one would be more beneficial.

Well, I assumed that if I applied to BB banks this year here where I live (Italy), then when selection starts in london next september the same banks wouldn't consider me, having already applied to the same firms just 7 months before.

Am i wrong in this assumption?

    10 week small PE > 10 Week L'Oreal + 2 week PE > 10 week L'oReal > 2 week PE

    10 week small PE > 10 Week L'Oreal + 2 week PE > 10 week L'oReal > 2 week PE
But then again, the PE shop wouldn't have any brand name.
