BMI..there isn't one really, as its rather inaccurate, if you go by bodyfat% however, your menstrual cycle will be interrupted/may stop altogether, no sex drive, other problems to do with messed up hormones, lethargy problems, you name it, it happens.

How much lower?

Mine is barely 18 and I'm generally okay, except I do have anemia.

You could stop having your period which ultimately could lead to infertility. also if you go much lower ul probably look a bit **** to be honest. any lower than 17.5 and a doctor would class you as anorexic. hot stuff!

when I lost 3 stone I got down to the lower end of my bmi and my periods went mental I've since put on almost a stone back and am now mid healthy BMI range and they are back ok again.
Perhaps you should put on weight so your in the healthier range...

BMI isnt actually that accurate though if you're under 18. I didn't get my curves at all until I was 19/20 and probably had a BMI that low when I was 17 but ate like a horse and certainly didn't look anorexic. If you are getting into your 20s and your figure is properly matured then I'd consider getting yourself into the healthy range I would concentrate on being healthy though rather than BMI. My friend is 6 1/2 stone and has always been that weight but never has had an ED shes just a lucky skinny bitch.

bmi is totally bull shiet!!!!!!! inaccurate by 100%, its stupid!

it doesnt take in characteristics of a wide range of races i.e. black, white, asian etc because different people hold weight differently. theres just too many other characteristics which arent included. really people, bmi its total bs.

Its not total ********! its not entirely accurate but it can give a good idea for fully developed ppl of wat sort of weight they should be. It only works as an average though if your very muscly for example you'l have a higher bmi than a some ppl waaaay fatter than you, but if your over 18 with a bmi of 17 or less then this will always be a fairly good indication that you are underweight unless you really are one of the very rare few that are naturally skinny without looking like a lolly pop

 my bmi is 16.8 but i've always been this way... so is everyone with bmi under 17.5 anorexic? :frown:
i've tried gaining weight, (eating a lot etc) but it doesn't work, plus i do have quite a bit of fat, i think it's partly because i'm very small- boned... i think bmi is not that accurate in measuring your state of health...

Being a certain weight doesn't make you anorexic! Some people are just naturally very thin. Anorexia is when you refuse to eat. 17.5 isn't that low. When I was anorexic I was discharged from hospital when I got up to about 17 so it's not that bad.
I'm only 20.2, but i do a lot of running.
Hey, I have a bmi of 17.5 and I do tonnes of sports but need to bring on the protein for muscle bulk but you are succespible to illness, bugs, cld, fly, joint problems and such later in life also.
Generaly its mainly people with eating disorders etc that are under in an extreme way tho there are plenty o other reasons. Still i can't imagine it being very healthy.

At the priory, they make you get your weight up to between 20 and 21. *grumbles* I'm not to keen on the BMI system, the line between what's healthy and what's not seems a bit too arbitrary to me IMHO.
I know my BMI is in the um definetly not healthy part. Still gives me something to aim for.

They were a bit iffy about letting me go, normally they want you up to about 20 but that never would have happened, it's been 2 years and I am still only at about 18.
Begginning to feel at the very fat end of the spectrum. is everyone under 20? :frown:

no sex drive? is that 100% medically true? that could explain alot :frown:
Whoever said that having a BMI of under 17.5 doesnt make you anorexic is correct. but it is one of the criterion for anorexia. by BMI is about 18.8ish and I find that when I'm under 18.5 I do stop my periods, so I think thats the main reason why you shouldnt be under 18.5. but as people have rightly pointed out, it doesnt take into account muscle mass. I would say that if youre under 17.5 then that really is unhealthy. I found that when my BMI was 17 that I was cold alot, and my sex drive was gone, and my periods (and with that comes the risk of osteoperosis), and was very tired alot aswell.
