    Hi guys,

So I'm not sure how many pure mathematicians there are in TSR, but hopefully there are some who would be willing to answer this

So I'm interested in doing a PhD in Pure maths but I'm a bit undecided about the topic. The things that interest me are roughly speaking:

Metric Spaces, Hilbert Space, C*-algebras, functional analysis ... so basically anything close to metric spaces ...

Can you tell me if there is some good research going on in those areas ? Are there a lot of "things" to discover, etc. Or are most of the things already done and agreed on ...

So, yeah, basically any advice and info would be welcome !

    Thanks guys

PS. I'm not so much interested in applied maths (like functional analysis in probability or in PDEs ...)

Are you in the final year of your first degree? If so, you'll know the members of your faculty who specialise in analysis. Talking to one of them will get you a lot further than anything else. Hilbert spaces are at the heart of so many branches of analysis (not so say theoretical physics) that there are lots of potential directions you can go in.

I know but in my department, thoses modules are taught but there isn't a single researcher doing his/her research on them: They all specialise in different stuff like PDEs, probability, etc. (even if they teach those modules) so if i can get some good advice, it would be from other departments I guess or from PhD students here who know those fields ...

I'm not a postgrad, but I'm applying for a PhD in pretty much the exact same area as you, PM me if you want to chat.
