    In general, to integrate a term such as 3x^2, you increase the power by 1 and divide by the new power, so you get x^3. You also have to add on a constant C since it would be ignored in differentiation. In symbols, \int ax^n\ dx = \frac{ax^(n+1)}{n+1} + C. It's the reverse of differentiation.

    For a definite integral, such as \int^2_1 x^2 +1\ dx, you have to work out the integral with no C and then sub in the top and bottom values and subtract the bottom from the top. In symbols: \displaystyle \int_1^2 \{x^2 + 1\} dx = \left[ \frac{x^3}{3} + x \right]_1^2.
