I've read Midnight's Children and it was superb. His storytelling is engaging and thought-provoking and his command of English is, as you say, brilliant. I would recommend it to anyone.

as posted above, Midnight's Children is really good! Although it is quite long, and there are a lot of ideas running through the novel all at the same time, but once you get used to it then it does become rather enjoyable
and it must be good for me to still like it after studying it for the past term... thinking of that... i should really redraft my coursework on it being it was in for before the christmas hols
i really want to read Satanic Verses

I got through the first 20 pages of Satanic Verses and had to put it down because it was too much for me to read at the time (had my exams & deadlines and its quite a lengthy book)

But from what I got so far, it seemed like it was pretty interesting.

I'll have to put midnight's children on my list too now
