    Because electrons have both wave-like and particle-like properties (wave-particle duality) and their wave-like properties allow them to be diffracted

    Don't know what you mean by "shape of the atoms" but diffraction arises from interaction of the incident electrons with the electron cloud around atoms. So the pattern arises not from the shape of the atoms but their arrangement in the sample material, which is how you can get structural information from electron diffraction.
