Hi, I've just gotten a part-time job and have been given a P46 form by my employer as I haven't a P45. I've been told by friends that I will be exempt from tax if I'm a full time student but theres nothing on the P46 I have that alludes to this and have been told by my employer that I will be taxed. Can anyone help?

Whether or not you pay tax on your part-time job depends on how much you earn, not on the number of hours you work or if you're full time student. Everyone receives a certain amount of income in each tax year on which no tax has to be deducted from your wages. This is called your 'Personal Allowance' which changes on a tax-yearly basis (£6,475 in 2009/2010). If your earnings from your part-time job are below this, then you do not have to pay tax on them. If your earnings are more than this, you will pay tax on the difference.
