How to get an A in A-Level English Literature?

Hi,

i'm a bit confused as to how to hit those higher AOs... How exactly are you meant to evaluate the novel/text? I think I'm doing it but I'm not hitting the marks, so I just wanted to double check. ALSO, what's meant by a critical understanding? Is it just criticising the author's work?

I have tried asking my teacher but he constantly tells me not to worry about the marking criteria... but I think it is necessary to know what the examiners are looking for.
