# Maths Help please needed... algebraic expressions!! Watch

1. Hi everyone, come on here as a last resort as I have my maths exams on 10th Jan and I am failing miserably at studying and revising for them. I am self teaching and the book i have pressumes a lot of prior maths knowledge which I just dont have.

I have no idea how to do simple things like manipulate an algebraic expression... the example in my book says

y=5+(x-3)^2
y=5+(x^2-3x-3x+9)
=5+x^2-6x+9
=x^2-6x+14

I just dont know how it has arrived at this at all, it doesnt tell you and assumes you can see how the process is acheived.. I cannot and am feeling very much out of my depth here! where has the 9 come from? I havent got a clue about expanding out brackets, tried ages to work it out myself!!
Also what is meant by factorising expressions... im completely lost and would appreciate any help at all.
2. 5+ (x-3)^2

Multiply out the brackets as it says squared , which would then open up more terms which will get you your answer.
3. It looks like you're struggling with expanding brackets.

Do you know, for example, how to expand ? Or, more generally, ?
4. This is how you multiply:

(a+b)(c+d) = ac+ad+bc+bd
