AQA Psychology B Unit 1: a high B/ low A should take 19 hours Watch

    I just spent my entire evening and night planning out how to revise for PSYB1. Here's what I came up with:

    Learning all definitions should take 7 hours
    Doing practice research methods should take 2 hours
    Learning model essays should take 4 hours
    = 13 hours + 6 hours exam papers (4 the day before, 2 any random time)


    Approaches/ Biopsych = 20 marks
    The question is likely to be discuss Psychodynamic/Biological approach SO memorise essays for each = 10 marks

    Be able to answer what is meant by:
    Biological: the influence of genes; biological structures; the evolution (3)
    Behaviourist: classical conditioning; operant conditioning (2)
    Social Learning Theory: modelling; mediating cognitive factor (2)
    Cognitive: the study of internal mental processes and the use of (2)
    models to explain these processes.
    Psychodynamic: the role of the unconscious; psychosexual stages; (4)
    the structure of personality; defence mechanisms.
    Humanistic: free will; concepts of self and self-actualisation; conditions of worth
    (3)
    Total = 16
    NEED TO KNOW WORD BY WORD DEFINITIONS OF EACH (AO1)
    Be able to explain each of these, make 2 points about each

    Physiological psychology
    -Basic understanding of the structure and function of neurons
    and synaptic transmission.
    - The divisions of the nervous system.
    - Localisation of function in the brain (cortical specialisation) including
    motor, somatosensory, visual, auditory and ‘language’ centres.
    -neurosurgery,
    -post-mortem examinations;
    -EEGs
    -electrical stimulation
    - PET
    - MRI
    -adrenal glands, adrenalin
    - fight or flight response.
    The genetic basis of behaviour
    -Difference between genotype and phenotype.
    -monozygotic (MZ)
    -dizygotic (DZ).
    -Use of twin studies,
    - and family
    -and adoption studies to investigate
    - the genetic basis of behaviour

    Total = 18
    NEED TO BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN EACH OF THESE (ao1+2)

    Gender = 20 marks

    Be able to answer what is meant by:
    Biological explanations: Klinefelter’s syndrome and Turner’s syndrome;
    influence of androgens (including testosterone) and oestrogens. (4)
    Social learning theory: reinforcement; modelling; imitation and
    Identification. (4)
    Cognitive approach: Gender schema theory; Kohlberg’s cognitivedevelopmental theory, including gender identity, gender stability and
    gender constancy. (5)
    Psychodynamic approach: Freud’s psychoanalytic theory; Oedipus
    complex; Electra complex; identification. (4)

    Total = 19

    - androgyny
    - sex-role stereotypes
    - cultural variations in gender-related behaviour
    - nature and nurture.
    (4) Be able to explain these in detail

    Question is on discuss psychodynamic/SLT so memorise essays for each =10

    Research methods = 20 marks
    - Memorise the ethics of experimentation
    - Qualitative and quantitative research: the distinction between qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques; strengths and limitations of quantitative and qualitative data
    - Populations and sampling. Sampling techniques, including opportunity, random, stratified and systematic
    - Experiments: field, laboratory and quasi-experiments. Issue of ecological validity
    - Controls associated with different designs, including
    - counterbalancing. Strengths and limitations of different experimental
    - designs.
    - Strengths and limitations of experimental method
    - Pilot studies and their value.
    - Correlation studies. The difference between an experiment and a
    - correlation study.
    - Observational studies: natural and laboratory settings; covert and
    - overt; participant and non-participant observation.
    - Case studies. The role of case studies in psychology.
    - Strengths and limitations of these methods.
    Be able to define/low level explain each of these (AO1)
    Do lots of practice papers for research methods.

    Good post but if anybody's using this for the 2013 exam, the 10 markers are going to be unique so don't learn model answers.

    Argh wish I'd of seen this earlier! Lol, don't think I did too bad, aiming for a B but will be happy with a C!!!
