Emmanuel College

Can anybody tell me anything about Emmanuel College... outside what's stated in the prospectus...

i'm applying to study computer science, and i was just wondering what the people are like... pointers for interview.... that kinda stuff....

i heard that it is one of the most difficult colleges to get into (someone should have mentioned that to me before i applied).... but is that just myth or fact....

and what is up with the ducks! .... everyone talks about them...

any help/info would be appreciated.

Noooo I love the ducks! But the popularity of the college means I will probably never get to meet the ducks, which is very sad...

i try not to think too far into the future... right now, i'm just trying to arm myself with the right ammo to go into the interview... at least i would have given it my best shot...

though.... i'm not sure which is more depressing... giving it ur best shot and being rejected... or not trying hard enough, and constantly having that nagging feeling that if you just pushed yourself, you could have made it.....

damn i wish i was still in primary school... life was good.... and easy... :p:

You need to more specific with your enquiries about emmanuel, I don't have time to ramble on for ages about my college so can only really answer specific points. To address those already raised:

Yes it is considered one of the harder colleges to get in to, however this does not affect your chance of getting in to cambridge, since emmanuel end up pooling quite a few students who I think quite often get picked up by other colleges. It's just difficult due to the number of applicants (and hence the standard) I believe. The interviews probably arent any harder than at any other college (obviously I can't be sure, but I severely doubt they make them any harder). and anyway, if you do end up getting in, it makes you feel extra special that you beat off so many other people desperate to get in themselves!

Everyone talks about the ducks because that is one of the most obvious distinguishing features of emmanuel. As Lauren pointed out, we have a pond, and hence we have lots of ducks. It's quite nice to see them around and about; they usually spend their time next to the pond, but can often be found collected in front court, or sometimes waddling through the passageways into new court. When there are ducklings everyone who walks by can't help but go "awwwwwwww" (they're so cute they really are, they just get ugly when they mature).

In reality I don't think the ducks are the main reason why people choose emmanuel, it's just an easy answer to give, there's obviously a hell of a lot more to emmanuel (oldest outdoor swimming pool in europe, the only college that does your laundry for you for free, paddock area so you can actually walk on the grass somewhere in college! etc etc).

Computer science is relatively small at emmanuel, I was a 25% compsci last year, so knew the full compsci's, of which there were 3 I think. Because it's a small subject you tend to have supervisions out side of college for about half of your course, but you get used to travelling all the way to west cambridge for a supervision after a bit.

Willa: can you reccomend any books that should probably take a look at...

generally, how many lectures a week do students have to contend with...
--------------
generally do you know what the ratio of student applicants to place for comp sci is??

Thanks for the info Willa. Well, if you want specifics, here's a couple: What are the rooms like? I know there's a laundry service, but what other facilties are there (cooking etc)? Is there a shop nearby?

as for every subject, you shouldn't think that reading a tonne of stuff is going to improve your chances. The SAQ is there so that you can tell them what you have done in class at school, and so they will only expect you to know that material, they will help you without penalty on anything additional you might need. Just really make sure you know everything you've covered and that you can see connections and patterns between everything (they tend to "extrapolate" on knowledge a lot). for compsci, although I didn't have compsci interviews, I am guessing they want competence to follow logic sequence so make sure you're sharp at following basic computer logic. For the science ones make (especially physics) make sure you're good on the mechanics/dynamics stuff - all the basics.

The ratio is is about 5:1 I think (maybe 4:1). But it's probably different every year.

Rooms are generally good (but cambridge rooms tend to be like that). Your first year room is usually pretty standard, and located in college. In second year you move out of college and your room will depend on a ballot. I came rock bottom so this year have technically the worst room in the college, but it isn't THAT bad even at that. In third year you move back in to college, and since I'll be top of ballot I have my eye on some rooms which have their own massive living room and then seperate bedroom/study. mmmmm.

Cooking facilities are poor at best. Just over a year ago they took away the hobs in the gyp rooms due to fire safety, there is still an ongoing battle by the union to get them back. The gyp rooms are the little kitchen rooms, little being the key word. Generally you will be expected to eat in hall I think that is why the facilities aren't that great, although there are a couple of decent kitchens around that you can use....none of which have the vital communal furnish: a table. *sigh*

Nearest supermarket = sainsburys in town.

there is always more work to be done at cambridge. If you want o spend all your time working there is plenty of reading/work etc that you can do.....but if you want to have a bit of a social life (like most students) you just balance it out properly.

thats good to hear.... so i should be coming across as a well rounded individual with the ability to buckle down to work when required.... but the capacity to partay hartay till six in the morning....??

Do you reckon i need to be looking at the latest in techonolgical advancements... blah blah woof woof...

i know its not all about lots of reading... but its about dedication to the subject outside the course... and i'm just wondering at the type of stuff i should have been doing....

Your interviewers may well not be so interested in the latter capacity, though if you do get in you can feel free to do that, if it's your thing
