All university networks are connected to the internet via JANET...it's not broadband and the university will have paid for a single connection to the internet that will determine the speed of all computers connected through the uni network...having a search on the computer provider pages for each uni will usually tell you the exact speed...eg Soton connection to Janet was at about 25Mbps a couple of yrs ago before it got upgraded to 155Mbps http://www.bulletin.soton.ac.uk/0721a.html

Is there absolutely anything that you do not know regarding universities?

Well I'm on a 100MBit connection, but in between colleges and departments the CUDN (Cam Uni Data Network) runs on gigabit over fibre. I believe we have a few gigabit link to London that we share with APU and maybe some other little places. I've been where it enters cambridge's control too - the server room tour at the start of Michaelmas term is always popular with geeks

On my third night in Cambridge I was told all about how SuperJANET and the CUDN were set up because one of the fellows of our college was in charge of the set up of both. He was also the managing director of UKERNA until he 'retired' to college.

I think Imperial has a bigger internet connection than us though..
...I think 100MBit is enough for me at the moment anyhow

Alaric.

It really winds me up when they use A Level points as a postitive indicator in statistics. The crappest uni in the world could ask for As its no guarantee of teaching quality, as for employment stats they put you as working even if you are temping so they arent that reliable either.
