    Hi everyone,

I have ubuntu on my laptop, installed for me by my bf as windows 7 kept crashing.

For the past 2 days I've been trying to watch a DVD using Ubuntu's own movie player but get the message "could not read from source" or something like that.

I downloaded VLC Media Player to see if that would work, but it wouldn't play on there either!

Is there something I'm doing wrong? Can anyone help, I just want to watch a film!

Tell your boyfriend to download the necessary files/libraries/plugins to play DVDs (and really, any music/video format), if he doesn't know how to do this, well then, you'll have to learn this by yourself through google. Hint: Ubuntu has one of the largest and active support forums in the world. You should be able to solve any Ubuntu problem by googling it; e.g. "dvd cannot read from source ubuntu" will give you all the information you need.

Also, good call on using VLC, stick to it.

Edit: If learning is too much for you, then follow the instructions in post 2: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...41&postcount=2

Did you click 'File' then 'Open Disc' in VLC? Because that usually gets it working for me (although I am using OS X).

Thanks guys. I did indeed check out the ubuntu forums and managed to get the film working. I am now a snivelling mess as it was a sad film!
