    Here are the oxidation states for the products and reactants of a reaction between KBr and conc. H2SO4

    Oxidation states are for Bromine and sulfur each time

    KBr = -1
    H2SO4 = +6

    Br2 = 0
    SO2 = +4

    Which is the oxidation agent

    why

    The Sulphur itself has been reduced so it is the oxidizing agent

    The oxidising agent is the one which oxidises another but is itself reduce, so it's the sulfur.

    Remember OIL RIG (Oxidation Is Loss (of electrons) Reduction Is Gain (of electrons) to deduce what reduces and what oxidises. The oxidising agent is the one that reduces, causing another element to oxidise.

    ...therefore the one with the positive oxidation state, sulphur, is the oxidising agent.
