Modern Language - able to skip year abroad?

Hey,

I'm doing modern languages up here and I was wondering if anyone has heard of anyone skipping their year abroad and moving straight into their finals?

I'm only a first year but I'm seriously considering it as i feel that spending easter and my 3 months of summer in spain is enough to get my language up and I already speak french as it is.

Is this categorically unacceptable or if someone's grades are high enough can they miss it?

Just wondering as for several reasons I need to finish university sooner rather than later and feel that however much I would benefit from a year abroad, I could manage my finals without one.

Thanks!

I guess Becca will be able to help the most with this, seeing as she actually is doing lanuages, but anyway. Isn't it a mandatory part of the course though, as in you won't be able to graduate otherwise?

I know for Archaeology which I'm doing, its compulsary to do set excavations in the summer. I suppose if it was just to help with the learning of the language etc you might be able to get away with it, but I really don't know. Wouldn't future employers prefer a candidate that has spent time abroad as part of the course, for experiences and wider knowledge of the world etc? I guess if its really important that you don't then you should go and speak to the head of department/your tutor or something to see if something can be worked out.

Thanks, I just see both my brothers and my sister who all did a year abroad and just spent time hanging around europe and not doing much. Also, the university doesn't monitor what you do during it whereas some unis make you enrol at the uni in the target country. So basically i just figure I'll be sitting around in cafes doing very little bar getting very good at ordering drinks..!

I'll hopefully see becca online anyway and see what she knows about it.

Thanks for your help though!

Oh so you don't necessarily have to enrol at a university? Well that does sound like it could be a waste of time for some people. I suppose if you wanted to make the most of it then why don't you go to uni there?

Well there are other options - you can be an Assistant in a school, which I want to do if I can or you can get a job - I'd much prefer to have a range of options like those that are available in Durham!

They do in the Politics department if you go off an ERASMUS scheme, which i shall be doing next year and going to Spain.

As a 2nd year Mod Langs student just beginning to arrange my year abroad, I can tll you that it is CATEGORICALLY COMPULSARY. The only way they will allow you to skip it is with really good reason, ie if you are very ill, or you already live in that country. Durham definitely monitors your time abroad and the essay(s) you write at then end count towards 50% of your 2nd year marks.
Why would you want to skip a year dossing about abroad? Most people I know say that it's flat out the best year of their time at uni by 100 miles. Avoid work while you can! You'll spend the rest of your life doing it.

Sorry, an old post of mine I know, but this is along the same lines....

What other subjects have four year courses (with or without a year out)? I've heard the engineers are staying on like me, but I was wondering who else? I figure I may as well start getting buddies with them now!

Thanks!
