University Challenge

Both teams put up good scores while simultaneously demonstrating a lack of willingness to make common-sense buzzes. (The Lewis Carroll question stood out in particular in that regard.)

The questions last night seemed either blindingly obvious (Easiest music round in recent memory) with some highly obscure questions, like the one on mosses.

A real mixed bag, but it made for a good contest.

Just noticed that the University Challenge page on the BBC (here) has a picture of the disqualified Corpus team under a heading of "Hall of Fame" and above an invitation to "Discover the winners of University Challenge since 1963!" Slightly awkward, that.... :erm:

I do feel bad for 3/4 of the team given they were the most dominant side I remember (I never saw '97 Open). But rules is rules...

It's a shame because Gail Trimble was probably the most iconic contestant ever bar celebrities like Fry

Are these actual before the buzzer, sure enough to buzz points or just "before the contestant says it" points? Because there is a huge difference!

We should support Paxo against all the criticism about his beard.

Seconded, I usually get really high scores when playing by myself. But when we actually went I found that there were answers that I knew (the picture starter, for example) but didn't believe in myself enough to buzz - especially after having got a question wrong.

I know, these seem very high. For a start, watching at home you get both sides' bonuses, near-doubling the available questions. Secondly, I tend to be quite generous. Generally I say aloud an answer roughly when I would buzz. Overall, my score is what I would get playing alone, but I don't count it if they say it before me. Playing in real life I would be lucky to get one starter!

How many questions does 220 points translate into?

Awesome.

Is it just me, or does anyone else not like the new opening graphics? I feel they've tried to make it a bit too glossy and upbeat - it's more of a traditional show.

Just watched Monday's episode. Still stunned I got all of the art picture round right. Also a fan of the number of maths and physics questions this week!

Agreed about this week's episode being quite easy, got my highest ever score. Surprised the maths student didn't get the maths starter

Also, to the American fella, Chopin was not born near Paris

Yeah the last two episodes haven't seemed too hard.

I can imagine thinking Chopin is French might be one of those really common misconceptions that are always exposed in quizzes, like thinking Sydney is the capital of Australia. I suppose it's not too bad a guess though, considering Chopin did move to Paris when he was about 20.
