Haha I saw highlights of that - Paxman started celebrating when they got it right. I think it was an all-girls Cambridge team actually.

Just missed out on the uni challenge team this year - hope we get to the final again and win it though Magdalen last year were supreme!

Which college are you in?

This brings back memories - Jesus Hadley!

The engagingly named "Chantal Hadley".

Sorry should have been more precise, York (colleges are here but slightly irrelevant :P) but we did make the final last year thanks to the supreme clementinho. There was a tweet going round that that 'prog rock group have wandered onto university challenge' which summed the team up really.

You weren't in the 2009 York team? Laura Horton was said to be striking.

Oh heck, it's been a while, let's see Footlights College Oxbridge vs Scumbag College.

They were in 2009 so I think they'd have been chosen the year before I went there.... they were useless though iirc, went out in the first round!

And the Young Ones is class!

Ahahahahaha epic. You are getting repped for that
I know the Trimblenator smashed Durham at the first round of season 38 (I spend last week watching all the episodes with her...as I'm European I hadn't seen them before and I figured I need to catch up!) but it could have been 2008 (well the season aired for 2008-9)

It says on Wikipedia that Sussex got 10 points in 71/72.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_Challenge#Lowest_scores

I remember some team (a couple of years ago - was it an all-girls team from Oxford?) who languished on -10 for most of the programme - after quite a while they got a Starter for Ten and Paxman said "you've now surged up to zero points".

Oh dear!!! It must be so enbarassing to get 10 after all their efforts of getting onto the show!!!

Hahahahaha imagining finishing on a minus...you started with 0 and finished with -10!!!! fail!!! Hahaha aww I do like jeremy....

It would be fun to see a table of the highest scores ever - there isn't one on Wikipedia, it just says that UC Oxford got 520 once. Although the opposition was weak, i am looking to Durham as possible winner this year after that, they are very very sharp. 325 is impressive.

There's a table of highscores on this page:

There are some other nice stats on that site too!

Cool table, thanks. Someone should put it on Wikipedia. That puts the Durham score possibly in the top 30 all-time.

Is "open" the open university then? I've never seen them on there, but they seem to do extremely well!

You'd expect them to. Largest number of students, and mostly adults so they tend to have more general knowledge that you just pick up over the years.

Im guessing so. And no i've never seen them on ther either!! When was the last time they took part? I've only seen the last 3 or so series...

There were several complaints about Open's teams in the past, which usually featured much older contestants. I heard that they are no longer allowed to enter a team into the contest.

Also (concerning an earlier post), each year has several first year students (including this year!).

I wondered about the mature student's thing, but have they introduced a rule now? There did seem to be a growing trend a few years ago to have older students in winning teams, as obviously they would know more (unless you happened to have Trimble or Guttenplan in your team of course!) - but now they seem to be making a thing of the "average age of the team" each time.

Reply 599

Yeah, they're pretty keen on mentioning the average age for each new team. There are no solid rules against entering a team of mature students, but the producers are highly unlikely to pick such a team. I guess they got sick of the letters from irate viewers.
