It isn't a question of if she's 'thick' or not; it's if she's made out for the show. She obviously isn't think if she's been to Ox. You could be a complete genius but still not be great at UC because of how the show is.

Depressing then that people who made negative remarks about her brains above are being pos'ed and I've been negged by you for pointing out their sexist attitudes - clearly there is a problem about how female contestants are being seen and it's completely plain from the earlier comments that they were alleging that she's not that bright, which is ridiculous. You're negging the wrong person.

How are people here getting 100+ points while watching it? I barely get 5 questions right and I have an offer from LSE. Do you think they overestimated me? :s-smilie: (Serious question)

The debate on female contestants in itself is entirely different.

Personally I'd champion one of them just as much as any other, and some of the best players I've seen on UC have been female (Trimble and Warwick Christodoulou!). It's crazy to assert that any contestant is less bright than another because of gender.

So why did you neg me for pointing that out and critiquing the people who were doing it?

Because I still don't like India Lenon, regardless of her gender?

If anything it's because I agree with you on the sexism issue. Having a former model who seemingly did very little in that round is hardly breaking this apparent misconception of Women contestants is it?

Not at all! Doing well at quizzes doesn't necessarily correlate with academic ability. Most UC questions are just straight up fact retention, and while that certainly helps in a lot of academic contexts, it's by no means the only or even the most important factor in doing well at university. So don't worry.

The 'model' thing was a total exaggeration by the Mail, she'd done a few pics for some mags, as have loads of female students. So what? Somehow I have my doubts about your pose as a supporter of what you interpret to be genuine feminism, given your negging of me for having a go at sexism.

If you have some strange excessive preoccupancy over your rep then I suggest you take it up in private rather than clog up the UC thread with it.

I'd quite appreciate being able to have my free speech with regards to reputation points too without being badgered over it. It's quite unprofessional and invasive to call someone out over what they rep.

If you insist on extrapolating some non sequitur of sexism based on the fact that I'm not a big fan of one particular contestant, then I consider that incredibly myopic. But I'm not the kind to keep hounding someone over their views or where they cast their rep, so I'll let you think what you like and finish this needless discussion now.

Whatever we think of this contestant is inconsequential now at any rate as she's no longer a part of the show. I look forwards to the last two episodes of UC for some time now :cute:

Furthermore, you can be absolutely fantastic in tryouts/practice and then perform poorly on the actual show. There's a huge element of luck to it (there's nothing worse than watching the episode being filmed before/after yours and knowing way more starters), and it's also just a really different environment. Towards the beginning, I had trouble hearing the questions properly, never mind answering them.

Tell me about it, got so many starters on the one that got filmed straight after ours :frown:

I was just a bit annoyed that I was being negged for supporting her and attacking the sexism that gets directed against almost all female contestants and I was dismayed by the inconsistency between your statements and actions.

So who do we think is going to win tomorrow??

I've decided it's going to be Bangor, not completely sure why, just a strong feeling.

Reply 1812

I think It'll be Manchester and they'll win the final too. I've had a change of heart from UCL, though on the day either could win it.

I remembered how seriously Manchester take UC when I saw this years and last year's team when they were recording an episode the other day and they were there cheering on the next team of theirs. There's something about Manchester and UC :s-smilie:

I got 11 tonight. Tough semi final. Gilbert, the Manchester captain, is a smug so and so, isn't he. I hope UCL win the final next week.

Me too, I find him really annoying. Like all Manchester teams, they are (a) very good and (b) a little on the dull side.

Reply 1815

Ah, didn't realise UCL were in the final until we got an email that mentioned it. Look forward to watching it!

Reply 1816

That was a pretty good match, I thought, though I was hoping for an upset. Manchester, through no real fault of their own, are just kind of boring, aren't they? I desperately hope UCL win next week but I have the niggling feeling they might not. Which would be so immensely frustrating.

I did pretty well, 32 with 12 starters and 20 bonuses.

Reply 1817

Manchester were SO SLOW on the bonuses.

Reply 1818

135 for me. Good game from all players.

I thought with it being a Semi, he would hurry them more - Paxman rather let the Manc team get away with it I'm afraid, especially when they were well ahead they slowed right down.
