Sorry to disappoint those who were looking forward to the "bash slypie" festival, but this is a question regarding my jaw.

I can't chew with the right side of my jaw because every time I do, it pops and makes cracking noises, not to mention it feels misaligned. I haven't felt pain though. Does this mean I have TMJ? Is this serious?

I have to chew with the left side every time.

U should ask Miles or Helenia!

The temporomandibular joint can be quite painful if it is damaged or strained. You could be a person who gnashes her teeth at night and that can cause much strain on that joint which then reacts with pain. A dentist or orthodontist should be able to find out whether you are a gnasher, or are not biting properly.

I've had braces before--which I still wear retainers for once a week at night-- and I visit my dentist twice a year and neither have said anything was/is wrong.

It's just odd that my jaw cracks when I chew with the right: I hope I don't need surgery.

To reply to the other post:

TMJ is the temporo-mandibular joint and the problems with it are as follows:

In most patients, pain associated with the TMJ is a result of displacement of the cartilage disc that causes pressure and stretching of the associated sensory nerves. The popping or clicking occurs when the disk snaps into place when the jaw moves. In addition, the chewing muscles may spasm, not function efficiently, and cause pain and tenderness.

Both major and minor trauma to the jaw can significantly contribute to the development of TMJ problems. If you habitually clench, grit, or grind your teeth, you increase the wear on the cartilage lining of the joint, and it doesn't have a chance to recover. Many persons are unaware that they grind their teeth, unless someone tells them so.

Chewing gum much of the day can cause similar problems. Stress and other psychological factors have also been implicated as contributory factors to TMJ dysfunction. Other causes include teeth that do not fit together properly (improper bite), malpositioned jaws, and arthritis. In certain cases, chronic malposition of the cartilage disc and persistent wear in the cartilage lining of the joint space can cause further damage.

could you have dislocated it? My friend had a cold and was sneezing alot and then her jaw got swollen she could move it but it hurt like hell she went to the doctors and somehow she'd dislocated it.
some people can have more than 4 for some odd reason, but you would know what they feel like anyway. could the cold have gotten into the bone? that tends to be really nasty

My cousin had 5. It was nasty because one was lodged in her sinus cavity. Anyway, I have had many X-rays and I'm sure the doctor got all of them out. He better have anyway because my parents paid $2500 for that filthy operation.
