Medicine requires continuous studying. If you go for medicine, your application will be dealt with differently. Many students with straight As didn't even get an offer, you must like medicine to read it at uni. Are you happy to sit for exam. continuously ? One point very important, are you a good listener ?

If you go for Maths. go for actuary exam. after you graduate, ups and downs of banking industry bear little effect on professional actury

Hi. Im currently studying for AS level (5 exams next week probably shouldn't be on here lol) which are Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Maths, Further Maths.

Next year i am considering applying to study medicine or maths (with the intention to then work in the finance sector in accountancy or investment banking or an actuary.)

But I don't know which is best because both careers seem appealing. If I wanted to could I earn a lot in medicine or would the financial sector be more financially rewarding? :colone: Also would taking medicine be better in terms of helping people, which I find very appealing.

What combination of subjects would be good (I think next year I can cope with 4 if two of them are maths and further maths).

Thanks. I know this is random but....... any help would be great

Also if i work hard i know i can get A grades (A* in maths hopefully  )

Do you find economics/bio/chem hard? i want to pick it at alevels but im not too sure.

I didn't take bio to A2, only to AS. Its quite hard to understand what the examiner wants in bio but in AS at least its mainly memorising as opposed to actually difficult stuff. I think it would be harder at A2. I found it boring at AS which is why I dropped it.

Chemistry has some quite difficult concepts and a lot of memorising, but is IMO a very interesting and rewarding subject. You have to use different parts of your brain to conceptualise molecules and stuff like that. I would say chem is hard but if your teachers are good you'll be fine.

Economics is easier IMO to get C or B grade and I found AS easy. However to get an A* is difficult. I am finishing A2 currently and have only just realised/learnt what is needed in an A* essay answer. However I found economics the most interesting/fun and useful subject out of the 3.

BTW I recommend maths the most!
Your view may be very different on Medicine after you do some work experience, it's not always what people think it is *shrug*. I'm currently doing a week in A&E, was expecting it to be really exciting but in reality, half the people that come in seem to be things like sprained ankles and people who have had too much alcohol.
Ok, i just noticed this is quite an old thread.. what did you decide to go for in the end?

I made this thread a year ago and I now have a conditional offer for maths at Warwick as my firm choice. :-)

For me,I would better ,Do maths. Math is better .In medicine ,most of your study will be memorizing huge amount of uninteresting stuff . Math however is very interesting .
Do some work exp & volunteering to see if it is for you, don't underestimate a career pursing medicine it is a huge commitment 6/5 years in uni + 2 foundation years and even +3 if you wish to specialise. Thats why it has to be a very calculated decision to see if you really want to donit for the right reasons not the money

im in the same position- but firstly ask your self, what are you more interested in? Sciences or maths? look at this question for some time i.e. uring you work expiricne etc- would u enjoy life as a medic, or in a bank?
Then if you decided between dentistry and medicine- well they are both good careers, more money in dentistry, but I have spoken to dentists and they have said that teir job is quite boring- all you do is look at teeth. Dont listen to people who say that as a medic, you can earn loads- in the USA, they pay medics loads- becausse its not like the NHS.
Do you want a life with an interesting job, or a boring job?

I ended up choosing; chem, bio, phy and maths. Because I could let myself drop physics which is probs my best subject tbh. I think I've more or less ditched the maths degree idea, its just because I felt maths was really easy so a career in it looked very appealing.

Hii, I am in the same situation ! I have done the same subjects as you exactly . its 2013 now so you are probably in uni and can give me some advice. I am going in to A2 in September and I am doing further maths as an alevel in year 13. I have dropped economics. so this leaves me with maths furthermaths bio and chem. I don't know what course to do ? any advice please ?
