Hmm, well, if it's a girl (and you're a guy) then talk about current things in celeb world or personal interests- soaps, tv things like 'lost', they may think you don't have a life, lol, but just find out what they like and go from there...

ask them what they like....sport or tv or music, clothes, games or whatever and see how goes.
Also bring up things your interested in or passionate about and even talk about things you may dislike too

What if it were an adult in a 'just been introduced'/job interview etc kind of way (not that you like them, but that you just have to make conversation- I'm pretty good at this but I think I need a few more topics to add to my repetoire!)
Well if its a job interview, ask the person how long theyve been working there, if they enjoy it, then theres usually something you can follow up on from that.

its a bit off topic but just thought i might add; there are people however who just don't like making conversations. I call them the 'hi' - 'bye' people!....make sense? i bet everyone have people like that, that you just randomly see in corridors constantly and smile and say "hi"....walk off and say "bye"........darn i HATE that!

thats me :frown: i cant help it though
Just say hi, how are you, had a good week, doing anything tonight....
If you really click with someone conversation should come easily, if not just talk about anything really. I found it really hard to talk to people like the first weeks of my job but now im just like blah blah blah n tlkin a load of crap really.

Nostalgia. Bring up something warm and fuzzy from the past. Such as Pinky and the Brain (GREAT cartoon). Or say "Do you remember Gladiators?" (Wolf!). Surprising how some people suddenly rant on about that.
