Do retakes look bad?

I was just wondering, cos I kinda mucked up my C1 maths exam today. COMPLETELY mucked up. So, if I were to re take, would universities look on it as though I have failed, or not committed enough or something? I was planning on doing medicine but would re taking show a lack of application?

I wouldn;t worry about it. I Kinda mucked up an A level last year but didn;t retake I just did 12 & 13 together lol. But I don't think it looks bad if your other grades are good... It shows determination..?
I also feel like I did poorly on this paper.

If I say got a B/C on this, and then aced the other 2 modules in AS to get an an overall grade A in AS and A2, would it make my chances of getting into a decent university decrease if I applied for a maths degree? Or would they only care about the overall score (at the end of A2)?

Ahhh I know exactly how you feel!
But the worse thing is when you know most of the stuff and you muck it up.. :frown:
I feel so depressed now.. :/ Like what are my predictions going to be like?! :s-smilie:
It's better to retake a bad exam than it is to just leave it as it is. By "bad exam" I mean below C.

you don't have to disclose your original mark (unless you're applying to cambridge, and perhaps oxford). just make sure you ace it this summer.

As far as I have heard it is only Imperial that consider it as something bad for Mathematics modules. For me it was a problem (civil engineering) because they mentioned that it is preferred that students get an A in all Maths modules in their first attempt.

So, look up your universities and courses. I have not heard of any other uni doing this.

I heard that they can look you up on a database and see what you've done? Or is that just a rumour to scare people?

I bloody hope not.
How on earth do you 'muck up' C1? It's pretty much common sense mixed in with Higher Tier GCSE Maths...

As long as you do well in your retakes, it wont look bad.

And cheer up, you havent received your results yet, hope for the best.

Look... if you retake and get an A... it will look so much better than leaving it at a C.

No, loads of people retake although a few of the top unis may ask for slightly better grades if they know you are retaking!

I know of someone retaking A-levels and they got an offer from Warwick!

I am retaking and I have got an offer from Sussex (and hopefully Lancs and Notts otherwise I will cry)

*Edit: I dont know about medicine though!
I took the same exam three times :awesome: and as far as I am aware it didn't make any difference.
Doesn't make any difference. Hell you can even retake years. It shows determination. The end result is all that counts.

It can happen; well atleast it may have happened to me on Monday, lost 7 marks on careless mistakes. I think it's a bit more pressurising when you realise it's your first examination, your first Maths exam, invigilators are prowling, the times ticking etc.

Makes it a tad more difficult

^^ couldn't agree more exact same happened to me

I'm guessing your in AS year? Well, i would have thought if you re-take this in June and got a better grade, and apply to uni after September, you don't have to mention that it was a retake.
For example you only put down the best of the two grades. I thought you only have to mention when you want to retake them in A2 year.
Well, Thats what I did!

P.S- i heard this year's C1 paper was the most difficult paper released. =S How was it for everyone?

In the end, your aim is to get a better grade and to me it shows determination that you want to do better. However, I think it looks bad if you end up re-taking the exam more than once.. >.<
