what makes aberystwyth so special that its rated in the top 3 for student life?

the reason i looked at aber in the first place was because it was on an msn list of the top 10 unis in the UK. its also been on a tonne of other lists for student satisfaction etc. why is this?
im sure its a beautiful place, but what is it about aber that makes students like it so much. im sure its not the raging nightlife...

I really don't know. I thought of applying to Aber but then I went and it looked **** and all the students looked like they'd been smoking weed.

Thats not true :colondollar: I joke :P

Alot of people, myself included, wonder why the **** anyone would want to go to university in Aberystwyth. It was my last choice, because I had to make 5 on UCAS but there was only 4 I really liked, I had literally never heard of Aberyswyth, let alone be able to spell it. Then I visited Aber and the rest was history.

It's one of the joking Universites were everyone goes to have fun.

Perhaps it’s because of the wide and varied student experience you can have here?

Have you had a look at the Student Life pages on the website? They give some details on some of the many things students enjoy doing whilst at Aberystwyth.

http://www.aber.ac.uk/en/student-life/

From a personal point of view, I’ve loved my time here. The attraction for me is the large student population, making is easy to meet friends and bump into people you know. Other universities I had looked like were spread out over large cities, which seemed so un-friendly. There is a real community feel here, which I think is benefited by having the majority of the campus and halls of residence close together. Sure Aberystwyth doesn’t have large shopping centres or a bowling alley, but I’ve never found myself bored.

Have you visiting Aberystwyth yet? Maybe doing so will allow you to talk to some students first hand and find out their experiences of studying here.

The social life is great. Seriously.

And I don't know about you, but my department is one of the best in the world. It was a big factor. And they gave me £3,000. And a laptop.

Need I say more?

Doesn't it have the most pubs in a certain radius of campus?

San Antonio, Madrid is rated as 1st but that consists of a lot of bars & clubs as well.

2nd is a place in Denmark I think. That's pubs so I count that as 1st above Aber.

I've been there and the place is insane.

to be honest abbie, or whatever the hell your name is, i'm starting to think that if everyone at aberystwyth is as rude and condescending as you, thats probably why people don't like it there.
youve managed to reply to nearly every thread i've started on aberystwyth, with some stupid comment no-one wants to hear. you aren't as intelligent as you seem to think you are, so stop being so patronising and grow the hell up.

(1)The fact that you got her name wrong shows ignorance at its highest level.

(2)The fact that you didn't care that you got her name wrong shows more ignorance.

(3)I doubt people solely make their decisions purely on what one person has said.

(4)Isn't it a good thing that she is responding to most threads, most of the time with a fair enough answer.

(5) So now you are deciding what people want and do not want to hear, great! Thanks for making my mind up for me.

(6) Yet another absurd assumption. She could be very intelligent. You do not know her as a person so therefore in reality can not really judge. She must have quite a good level of intelligence to be at Aberystwyth University.

(7) Since when did you become the forum police?

i came on this forum to find out more about life at the unis i applied to - not for some pretentious idiots to make sarcastic comments about EVERYTHING. the responses have on the most part been helpful, but without fail there is some unconstructive quip to go along with them...and im not really sure why?? is it really necessary to treat new forum members with such an utter lack of respect?

the fact that you just itemised your incredibly poor case says much about how far you would go to defend such rude and unnecessary actions. regardless of your little list, no-one asked you to comment. just because you are friends with her doesnt mean that she - or you for that matter - can be excused for being condescending for no reason.

and lets be honest, you dont have to be particularly intelligent to go to aberystywth. thats why its my fallback.

May I suggest if you want non-sarcastic replies, you stop writing idiotic posts with clear prejudice about topics that you are ignorant about. Just a suggestion.

What's more, I'm not obliged to give you the answer you want. Welcome to the Internet sweetie.

I'm not sure about your comments on my intelligence, as you're the one who is unable to spell my name ... and I won't get started on your poor written English. That being said, I got into Aber with a full scholarship ... and you failed to get into University last year.

You see? We can all flame.

You started a new thread asking what was so special about Aberystwyth that attracted students yet then at the end of your post put an ill informed statement like 'im sure its not the raging nightlife'. Why ask when you are so convinced the night life at Aber is poor? Your whole theory doesn't make sense.

It would be like me asking if buying an iPad is worth it and then saying they are crap because they don't have flash. Can't you see the blatant contradiction?

Incredibly poor case? Again, you seem to be making decisions on behalf of other people for them. You may think it was a poor argument but that does not give you the right to say everyone thinks that. I think you did display a high level of ignorance by getting Æbbie's name wrong and then not caring about doing so.

Also this is a forum and I have signed up to, just like a lot of the other members and we are free, in this free world (in the majority of cases), of putting across our own opinions. Haven't you heard of freedom of speech? I am more than capable of putting my point across on here and it should stand, unless of course the moderators deem it unacceptable and remove it, however, your ignorant post is far more likely to be removed than my posts. The argument that you did not ask me to comment could also be twisted by me to say ' no one asked you to start a thread on this forum', but I'm not even going to go into that as I am not going to bring myself down to your level.

Also, you have come the assumption that we are friends. No at this moment in time we are merely people on a forum who speak to each other. Æbbie being at Aberystwyth already and I am starting in 2011. Maybe one day we will be friends but this has nothing to do with me highlighting your absurd level of ignorance on here.

Okay then. Congratulations on insulting all those who go to Aberystwyth, all those who went to Aberystwyth and are now in successful jobs, all those that go to universities ranked lower or level academically with Aberystwyth and all those that went to universities ranked lower or level academically than Aberystwyth and now have successful jobs.

Well done on insulting a high number of students and graduates, a lot of graduates which pay tax for the likes of you to even go to university. I hope you're proud of yourself. Without their contributions to the tax system there would be no universities for you to go to as the loans you take out would not be able to be paid up front by the taxpayer.

Considering Aberystwyth is ranked 43rd in the UK (according to the times, the best source), and the table goes down to universities ranked in the 120's I think you've insulted quite a lot of people, don't you?

Also, what about all those that don't go to university, I'd love to know your ill informed opinions on them? Please elaborate.
