I used to adore Mansfield, but since they rejected me I've had a change of heart.

colleges are different.

for example, merton is a very academic college, whereas others are more relaxed.

and some are really good i.e.) merton etc, whereas others are just not.

Hmm I'm interested in the sociology of the use of the word "****" as a noun meaning "crap".... it doesn't seem to be that widespread except amongst students.

Indeed.... and it can of course be used as a noun in its original sense, however I am interested in the usage of it meaning "rubbish".

Why? It's not perfect, you shouldn't look in detail whether a college is 11th or 12th, but it gives a good idea of which are academically strong (Merton, St Johns, Balliol, Christ Church, New...) and which aren't (LMH, Pembroke, Hilda's, Somerville...)

From the 4 options you've given in your poll..

Somerville - Quite far up north, poor academically
Mansfield - Fairly small, only 50+ in each year, but heavily involved in uni stuff, espesh journalism
Wadham - Brilliant all round - 2nd in academic table whilst being pretty relaxed, and having certainly the best parties out of any college which draw in ppl from across the uni
St Catz - Architectural beauty or monstrosity - mixed opinion. Nothing too special.

I'd definitely say Wadham out of those 4.

I really liked both Wadham and Somerville when I went to visit (don't know anything about the other two colleges you mentioned). I would say both are great for socialising (all the students I met were really lovely and outgoing) but as Jools mentioned, Wadham is much better academically. Plus I thought Wadham was an absolutely stunning college (with fantastic accomodation!)
