The Pill - help pls!

Hello, i am considering going on the pill, not entirely for contraceptive use (though that will be useful!) but to calm down my periods. I get very bad pains throughout it, and various other symptoms. I was just wondering if anyone is on the pill mainly as a consequence of periods?

Also, i am slightly worried about side effects, weight gain etc - has anyone had bad experiences? Iv spoken to my friends about it, but im just looking for a range of opinions before i visit the doctor.

Ive been on the pill for a while (I started taking it for my skin when I was in school, I now use it for contraception). Its worked wonders for me as I used to have very heavy, irregular periods, and awful period pain. I still get stomach cramps but nowhere near as bad as I used to, and obviously my periods are in a regular pattern.

I havent had any side affects-one pill I was taking gave me bad headaches at first, but once Id taken it for a few months they settled down. I havent had any weight gain or anything else. Obviously side affects will depend on the person, but if you do experience anything Im sure your doctor could put you on a different pill, you have to find one thats right for you.

Cool, it seems to have helped everyone iv asked with their pains!

This may sound a bit odd, but im a little worried about telling my mum i want to go on it. Shes a nurse, and we're very close, so it seems stupid for me to be scared, but im a mummys girl, an i live away from home, and for some reason i think she might be reluctant for me to get the pill.
I went on The Pill about 2 years ago to calm down my periods. They were regular, but gave me absolutely awful cramps, made me feel sick, and I was cooped up in bed for a week of every month. Not good.

Now i'm on The Pill, i'm as regular as clockwork *touch wood*, have cramps, but not nearly half as bad, and they are shorter and less heavy.

Side affects aren't bad; i've gained weight slighty, but i'm slim anyway, so I just filled out a tiny bit, but i'm the only one who noticed lol! Boobs got slighty bigger but not much, which was a dissapointment. Nothing apart from that!

Go to your GP *you can request to see a woman if it makes you more comfortable* and they will check your height, weight, and general personal health, and prescribe whichever pill she/he thinks will suit you best. Make sure you explain thats why you want to go on it in the first place though.

I'm sure your mum will be supportive if you tell her why you want to go on it. Even if she thinks you're doing it as a form of contraception, it shows you want to practice safe sex and aren't stupid.

Good luck!

Yeah - sure thing.

Consult your Doc, if your periods are abnormally painful. - It's not normal and pill won't do much.

If you explain your reasons forwanting it i don't think she should object. Not sure of your age, but even if you chose it for contraception i'm sure she'd at least be happy that
a)you felt you could trust her enough to talk to her
b)you're being responsible

That said i kept my implant from my mum for about 6 months...and the fact i was having sex for about 11...

Hm, the pill can help with period pain a lot, as it generally makes your period a lot lighter, but not always. I went on the pill to regulate my periods/for contraception and now I have cramps where they used to be painless! However they are about 1000 times lighter so that's brilliant .

I think if you need contraception then it's a good option, if not I'd be a bit reluctant to turn to hormones immediately. Talk to your doctor, mefenamic acid is brilliant for period pain (although it doesn't work for everyone).
