What I've done is £12 for 12 issues, then might just cancel it after that and go for the £62 for the year, but that's payable every quarter and AFAIK the student subscription service you must pay it up front?

Damn I didn't know about the student discount! I subscribed in early January 2005, so I'll have to renew it soon. I can't remember how much I paid but I know it was more than £70.

ask your school to get one. my school has one. so i have an access to all the info on website and can get the magazine itself in the library.

That's not the right attitude to take. The Economist is a magazine you should really be reading all the time, not just for an interview! If you want to do Economics at university, then reading the Economist should be something you want to do, and start now!
Reading from the Economist has... minimal input relation to what you do at uni in a few courses (max).

The Economist is useful for applying your theory (in your head more than anything) to something real world to make better sense of it and keep it interesting.

I read it not as an educational source per say, but out of interest. The articles are related to the economies of the world, of interest to me as I study Economics.

The Economist at the end of the day though is a newspaper and as such should be treated like that, personally I do find it enjoyable and have always been put off paying £3.10/issue for it, but thinking about it, it is something I'd happily pay £1/issue for (oh there's nice supply and demand analysis!). I don't think it's necessary reading though for anyone doing an Economics degree, I just find it easier to digest the weeks news reading the Economist than I do reading a newspaper every day which is something I rarely find myself having time to do (despite amble hours of doing next to nothing, there goes time management issues).
