Fertility

Hi guys,

I've got quite a strange problem and I'm not sure whether I'm just being silly or whether I should do anything about it...

I've been with my boyfriend for 3 years and I'm on the pill, but I'm always forgetting to take it at the right time. I often have unexpected periods and then realise I just haven't taken my pill for five days or something stupid. This also happened with a previous 6 month relationship as well.

The reason why I'm concerned is this: I've been absolutely crap with my contraception for so long, so why haven't I become pregnant?

I don't want to start having babies now, but I'm scared that, when I do, I'll find out that I'm infertile, and by then it might be too late to do anything about it. Should I ask my doctor for tests, or should I wait until the day I decide to try for kids? Is it stupid to worry about it now?

I was told (and this might be wrong) that the pill can play about with your cycle anyway, so if you ever did try for a family it might take a while if your body is used to the pill. So that would kinda explain it... although obviously this isn't always the case as people have been known to become pregnant while on the pill.

However, this could be the reason, but as I said, I didn't read it anywhere, I was told it.

It means you haven't hit puberty yet.

I'd mention it next time you go for your next supply of the Pill. Obviously, if you're not using it properly there is a risk of pregnancy and just because you've been lucky so far doesn't mean you always will be! You probably should think about another method of contraception.

I will - I've been looking into the contraceptive injection, and I think that's probably my best bet.

But should I be concerned about the infertility issue? If you were in my position, would you be worried?

It can take women who are actively trying for a baby a while to get pregnant. And you weren't trying, and will have had some protection from the Pill even though you weren't using it properly. So it probably isn't a problem, but do ask next time as they'll know better.
Well that lasts 3 months, but Implanon (the implant) lasts 3 years if you wanted something more long term
