Marketing vs Events Management

Hello , next year I apply for university. I was thinking about doing events management untill my brother's girlfriend said that events management isn't very broad, she said you do a degree in that , the only jobs you can get is in the events industry, so she said go for more broad course which gives you a bigger scope for a job after university, she said Marketing. I would just like people to tell me if they take either of these courses if they are good, and if you have finished the course if it was easy to get a job after the course, also what university are you at, and what were the entry requirments, and is the city good for the social side of university many thanks =]

Your brothers gf is righ  def marketing is a great degree, and leaves a wide range of career options open! If you wanted to specialise, then postgrad is the perfect opportunity. Otherwise you are limiting your options!

No I am applying for marketing management though. Yes I would say it definitely makes you more employable. Unless you are studying something like medicine or architecture, its always a good idea to keep your options open! Otherwise you may find you dont have the qualifications for future opportunities in your career which you would otherwise like to have a go at...

It perceptibly does. I want to do Creative Events Management/Creation (BA not BSc) because I want to pursue a career in that sector; therefore doing a degree specific to Events Management would help me get into that sector easier. Whereas marketing pretty much branches over a number of different sectors. You should probably find out what you career you want to pursue and find a course that fits that criteria.

How do you know that you still want to do events management in 10 years? If you decided to try something else, you wouldnt be able to , you would be very stuck.

Employers wont lok upon a marketing degree any less "relevant" than an events management one. I can bet you that 99% of people working in events management dont have a degree studying it...they will have business, or art, or could have anything else. They might not even have a degree.

If you look online at jobs, employers usually say (for example) "a degree in a business based subject and five years experience at management level" They wont normally reqeust an exact degree, for exactly the reason that it is limiting

I know I want to do it in the next ten years because I have been doing work experience in the sector since I was thirteen my family is full of creative managers who have studied the degree and still found fantastic jobs.

Sorry if you misread what I typed but I am not undermining a Marketing Degree, I am saying if I do Events Management I will gain greater skills to go into that sector faster because the degree is orbited around Events Management. Whereas Marketing Degree isn’t, it probably does a module on it but it’s not huge.

Also, not a lot of jobs request the exact degree but it doesn’t mean you can’t gain vital skills from it. I remember doing work experience with the ‘NFL London’ team and they were telling me some of them didn’t even do a business subject, but nothing stopped them applying for the job as it directed towards creative minds. I have also had work experience with Festival Republic, and a number of the younger workers there studied Events Management and they said “It gave me the right business and creative skills to pursue a career in Events Management”.

I have even heard of Game Designers, who studied the subject; a degree can take you to a lot of places. You just need to know where to look.

Hi !! I know this was years ago now but I was hoping for an update as now I’m in the exact same predicament. What did you end up choosing ?
Hello there!

Choosing between Events Management and Marketing depends on your career aspirations and how broad you want your opportunities to be after graduation. Events Management is a specialized field that focuses on planning and executing events, offering careers in areas like event planning, venue management, and corporate events. While it is more focused, the skills gained—like organization, project management, and communication—can be transferable to other industries.

On the other hand, Marketing is broader, covering topics like branding, consumer behavior, digital marketing, and advertising, which can lead to a wide range of careers in various industries. If you’re looking for flexibility and a broader scope for job opportunities, Marketing might be the better choice.

At Coventry University, both courses are excellent and designed to equip students with practical skills and real-world experience. Here are links to explore more:

BA Even Management course:
https://www.coventry.ac.uk/course-structure/ug/fbl/event-management-ba-hons/

This course focuses on the logistics, strategy, and execution of events, with opportunities for hands-on projects and placements.

BA Marketing:
https://www.coventry.ac.uk/course-structure/ug/fbl/marketing-ba-hons/

This program emphasizes strategic and digital marketing skills, preparing you for a variety of roles in marketing and advertising.

Coventry University is also known for its vibrant student life, industry connections, and a supportive learning environment. The entry requirements for both programs typically range from BBC to ABB at A-Level, depending on your qualifications. The city itself offers a great mix of social activities, cultural events, and a friendly student community, making it an ideal place for university life.

Both degrees have their strengths, so think about whether you want to specialize in events or keep your options broader with marketing. Either way, Coventry University provides a great foundation for your future career! 😊

I hope this helps!
Good luck!

Kind regards,
Reka - Coventry University Student Ambassador
