i am in year 12 and when it comes to speaking out aloud, doing presentaions and other school work, my confidence is really low and the funny thing is, this only happens in my history lessons, my teacher is fantastic, so i no it is nothing to do with her, i spoke to her about this, and she said my confidence will blossom, but i have had this problem for over a year! WHAT CAN I DO

Just start of slowly. Presentations were my fave ish at school/university. Tell a joke, introduce yourself...

Be prepared as the scouts would say. By confidence do you mean you suffer from bad nerves?

Reply 3

I have that problem. but i find the more you do it, the better it gets. make sure you know what youre going to say and plan it out beforehand. try to look confident, even if you dont feel it. i think everyone gets nervous when they have to do things like that, so dont worry about it.

Im sure youll be fine. i actually found in uni its not as bad as it was at college. youll prob be in a group for your first presentations anyway, which makes it so much easier, because if you mess up then, at least you can blame someone else!

take it one step at a time, it took me years to get out of that i never became confident untill i left college, just be patient and it will come to you!!

Breathing exercises are good. You need to learn about diaphragmatic breathing as it will help calm you down.

my face always goes red to! but iv learnt to ignore it! my suggestion would b to join ur school debating society (if u have one) dunno wats urs is like but mine was v open and u could screw up in the meetings and it wouldnt matter! I did debating for y12 and 13 and found it did my confidence the world of good! it allowed me to practise public speaking in a friendly enviornment, dont get me wrong- it was pretty scary to start with- but with everything it gets easier! so if ur debating society is nice.. and not just filled with stuck up boys- go for it!

I wasn't ever too keen on doing presentations. I used to hide myself in the middle of them; go at the beginning and everyone is attentive, and at the end it's the one they'll (in theory) remember.
In the middle most people have switched off, but even if they haven't it's not a problem; try not to make a big deal of it and get yourself worked up, it's only for your teacher to mark what you've done, the rest of the class isn't too concerned about what you're saying (that's not supposed to sound harsh or be directed straight at you, every class' main aim is to make it to the end of the lesson and go home!) and if you screw up, they'll have forgotten about it by the next day. If you don't make a big deal over it, neither will anyone else.
I'd also advise, even if you are nervous, not to make a big deal about getting up and doing it, this will only wake up the audience and they'll be more eager to see why you didn't want to do it.

OK, perhaps not the best advice on being less nervous, but hopefully some of it will help it be less stressful, at the end of the day, it's just a presentation, plenty of people don't like or aren't good at them.

when you present keep a big smile cuz that makes you approachable and makes you sound and see interesting.. unless youre doinga serious topic

take it one step at a time. I am lower than low in confidence, though I wouldn't say I'm particularly quiet outside of lessons. Start by making yourself say something in your lessons at least once everyday day. Gradually build up and then soon you'l be away!

what i do is to stare into the back of the class (ie. the wall) and just present as if im talking to the wall..

sounds kinda old school but i think it works cos it not only allows me to not look at my classmates and get nervous; but it also help in the making-eye-contact part as although im staring into the back, teachers actually think im making eye contact. and this would boost your presentation marks!

most of my friends will tell that i am not the most confident person around socially. BUT, i have been a debater since i was 13, and after a few debates i lost that self-conciousness I was about in year 8 (end of) when i could confidently make a speech in front of an audience. Just last year i took part in the world debating championship. It's all up to facing the fear. You honestly can't do anything other than just doing it. No breathing, mental imagery or anything will help. you just have to get used to it. You will quite likely make a few silly mistake (spoonerisms etc.) but don't worry, no one is any bit better off. you just have to face your fear.

Just believe in yourself take a deep breath and just go for it. If you dont care what other people think your confidence will sky rocket!
