No Interview at Trinity

Hi,

I got a letter from Trinity (applying for maths) that they have "decided not to interview me in December" and that after that "your application will be given a full consideration". (I live in the UK)

What does this mean? How can my application be given full consideration without an interview? Is this a pre-rejection letter? Anyone got something similar? Anyone got a place in the past years with this letter?

Thanks

Michail
Wow - I've never heard of your situation before for Trinity Maths - I know all the people who received the (at our college) rare EE offer for Maths, and all were most definitely interviewed. In fact, other than the internationals Trinity interviews almost everyone who applies...

Call them and ask?
I was interviewed for Maths at Trinity, failed miserably mind, but I suggest your situation is a rare one. I would definite follow synaethesia's idea and ring Trinity and just enquire about it, maybe it wouldn't be a good idea to state your name, just ask "if you don't wish to interview me, but say you are going to fully consider my application then what does this effectively mean? and dont beat around the bush" lol. I stress, don't say your name after it though

Do you have a criminal record? maybe they're scared to meet you
Or maybe they were repulsed by your photo.

No offense.

Maybe the OP is the only such person. Hence would be easy to identify?

Wasn't there a recent thread by someone from Switzerland who applied to Trinity and got the same letter? I think there was. I haven't been invited for interview by them yet. I'm scared. :afraid:

I will call them, thanks for the advice.

I am very puzzled by this. I will ask them and see how it goes.

And, no, I do not have a criminal record, nor do I look exceedingly ugly (although I'm no James Bond)

yeah there was someone who reported recieving a rather odd letter. Hmmm, perhaps trinity just have too many high calibre mathmo's applying this year that they've decided to get tough?

What is your academic record like? I.e. is there anythingf particularly outstanding there (be it a good thing or a bad thing)?
Same sort of thing for me at girton. I'm applying to read oriental studies and i'm in China 'til dec 9th. Their interviews are 5th and 6th, and apparently there's no chance of being interviewed on the 10th!Aanyway, they've decided that they are willing to consider my application further without interview. I have to send in 2 essays. One english and one in the foreign language i studied for a level. I don't think this is entirely fair as i've learnt a hell of a lot of Chinese since I've been out here - which won't be shown through 2 essays! Bad sign I think.

I doubt it'd be anything outstandingly bad.

I've been given an interview and only got: BCCCCCCDDD at GCSE (B in Maths), maybe they already know your great.

Do you have the same name as a famous mathematician (if I was a professor I'd definately let *anyone* with the name "Euler")?
People winning multiple medals including golds at IMO have all been interviewed. A strong academic record is unlikely to be enough, esp if you're a home student.

Well I called them and they said "It doesn't mean anything, we can't interview everyone can we?" and they repeated the "It doesn't mean anything" a couple of times so I said fine. I didn't mention my name.

If I were to think logically about this, they would have given me a rejection letter if they were sure they don't want me, given the large number of applicants?

I really have a lot of A levels. I've got 5A*, 4A and B (In English Lit, it's not my first language) With A*s in Maths, Double Science, Electronics and Russian. For my A levels...

BTW Russian and Polish are my native languages, so no surprises there...

Russian > A (Already done the Full A2 Level and have the certificate)
Polish > A (Already done the Full A2 Level and have the certificate)
Biology > A (AS level, dropped)
Chemistry > A (predicted, will be taking A2 level)
Physics > A (predicted, will be taking A2 level)
Maths > A (predicted, will be taking A2 level)
Further Maths > B (predicted, I am studying Further Maths outside of lessons, so my teacher gave me a B predicted)
Gen Studies > Who cares? I will probably get a B

Comments?

hmmm, I would be pretty concerned about the B in Further Maths. Trinity is *the* place to study maths, and gets applications from the likes of Paul Jefferies/IMO squads/winners.

I know somebody from my old sixth-form college who applied at the same time as I did to Oxford. He was very smart with excellent results and a really great guy. Deserved to get in at least as much as anybody, but got a letter back rejecting him without interview.

If they don't want you, they wont be vague or mysterious about it, they'll tell you. Maybe they've made up their mind about what kind of score to give you and are simply waiting to see how the others compare before they rank you in relation. If this is the case, you're in more or less the same position, except your score will be calculated with one less factor, is all.

Paul Jefferys is just a great big drunkard! You should have seen him at the Boat Club Dinner tonight, he's my academic contact and him and I were going to have a drunken tuxedoed erg race, but we couldn't get the ers ou :frown: maybe we'll do it next term!

Ah, to be a borderline alcoholic fresher again.

Here's a tip, don't buy a breakfast of a bottle of Sprite and a chicken and mushroom pasty every morning on the way to your Vector Calculus and Dynamics lectures in Lent term, while going out and getting smashed 4 times a week. Does bad things to your weight, trust me, I know....

For my A levels...
Further Maths > B

I can't imagine this will bode well with the admission people at Trinity.
