UCL Social Life...the horrible truth.

Ok, well here's the info on socialsing...the union is about as lively as an old people's home and hate to say it but if you're anything but asian, you'll stick out like a sire thumb. Union requires you to queue for ages before getting in and drinks are pricey considering its for students. Then after you go in search of some real entertainment, and you will after the UCL union shambles, you'll be faced with typical up their own arse london clubs with a tenner entry fee and extortionate drinks prices. Don;t expect more than 3 drinks for under a tenner.
I say no more....well infact Ive got loads more to say.

Is there anything wrong with the union other than the asians? prices _are_ expensive in london ... but surely you knew that before you applied? take out a fat loan ... enjoy yourself. get a chinawhite membership (there's no longer a waiting list)

Ahem! Are you implying that Asians are a problem?!

Well to be honest the Asians I know are crap socially. Not boring, but they get their kicks in ways that disgust me. Especially since I'm an Asian myself. Though I identify with my fellow Englishmen more.

You know, you can put words in bold/italics or underline them for emphasis..

No offence, but I think it's hard to generalise an entire continent that way. Lolz.. maybe it's just me being sensitive since I'm Asian myself.

Not at all, I've got loads of asian mates, but you can;t help but feel absolutely secluded with a ratio of one white to every 15 asians.

Well here's the low-down on other aspects of the oh so overhyped UCL....The UCL drop-out rate is suspiciously high; I was studying Archaeology there last year, but dropped out, and I'd estimated that by that point, about 10% of the year had already left. UCL is hideously overpriced, and the union is quite shit in all honesty. (99s, an event where all drinks cost 99p, seems like a good idea in theory but in practice? 1,000 drunk students packed into a venue the size of a shoebox dancing to 'I Think We're Alone Now' by Tiffany and waiting five hours to be served.) Yes, London has a plethora of nightclubs. You name it, London has it. The only problem is that Euston/The West End is not conducive to the type of money your average student will have.

As for the accommodation, I stayed in Schafer House which looked like a prison block, had a common room that was out of order for two months, broken curtains in my bedroom which didn't get fixed in the six months I'd stayed there, and post that regularly went astray. And, joy of joys, I was paying £82 a week for this! Some people I knew at UCL were staying in converted Victorian houses (Campbell House, I think) which had shared rooms, six flights of stairs, no lifts, and one basement kitchen/washing room which was shared between 60-odd people.

Thank god I didn't apply there. With that many Asians I wouldn't fit in well. Despite my brown skin and Bengali origin. You'd have to know me to understand.
Just glad I didnt apply to UCL.

Afraid so. More Calcutta than London.
Hmmm...I applied for English at UCL and I haven't had a response yet (have had replies from everywhere else). I didn't really want to go there before, but after reading this thread I think it now very unlikely that I'd go there if I got an offer. Do you think I should cancel my application there?

I have met plenty of people who do like UCL -- get a range of opinions, and go to open days etc. to help find out whether it'd suit you.
^ dont think u shld base ur decision on someone else's opinion. wen i visited ucl i saw plenty of "white faces".

i thought kings was the one that had lotsa asians.

i dont really have a problem with asians, but i can understand how u'd feel abt bein outnumbered. i remember goin to heathlands sixth form and there was only eone white guy there. everyone else was asian. i felt totally outta place, and im only half white myself (the other half is malaysian)

If you want to give your opinion on UCL then that's fine. But exactly how many threads to you need to slag them off?

The social life at my uni dosn't sound much better but that is probably because I live at home. My society was supposed to change all that though.
