My dislike started in Advanced Higher, when I got very sick of his obsession with all things related to bogs. Thankfully, this poem (The Forge) has little to do with bogs. Still not a fan though.

I like some poetry. "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost is great. I love Robert Burns. But, mostly, I think poetry is a fairly sh*te medium of literature. I've not read enough Heaney to make an accurate judgement of him, but what I have read, I liked.

There's too much emphasis on poetry at Advanced Higher.

heaney is soooooooooooo bland and annoying!!!

I'm really struggling with this essay, I don't know howto criticise poetry at all, I have no clue about all the jargon (the metre of a sonnet and iambic pentametre and all that jazz). To be honest I'd love to have the weekend to work on it, but if I hand it in 3 days late I drop a whole grade. Meh. And since my last essay got dropped from an A- to a C+ for late hand in, I'm not to keen on missing any more deadlines.

I don't know Heaney, but I can't agree about poetry in general. Whilst I don't read a great deal of it, there is some fantsatic stuff out there.

Good luck on the essay anyway.

I hated Heaney during GCSE too.. I just remember bogs and potatoes. Not much fun

I'm not a big fan of poetry in general though.. well, reading it is fine, but then getting hyper-analytical about inversions of syntax blah blah blah is boring as hell. Blake is cool though

Not that I care to remember much about my years of English (horrible memories of inept teachers, one of whom had a grudge against me), but wasn't Heaney a Northern Irish farmer or something like that? What do you expect him to write about?

Though I do feel your pain - I did some Heaney stuff for either Standard Grade or my first attempt at Higher, and I despised it.

and yet, here I sit trying to write a Heaney essay for tomorrow. *sigh*

Er... I don't think the point of this was to actually discuss poetry but rather share his own moaning.
That's what we do in the books forum!
mainly moan.

True, I think I've mentioned my hate for Mosquito Coast there about 1752 times...

I wanted to rant about my woe, not discuss poetry (as Natalie  pointed out). That being the case, I thought it best not to post in an "official" forum where no doubt someone would have said something along the lines of: "Stop ranting about your woe", and confine myself to the safety of chat where I can say whatever the hell I want without people getting on their high-horse about it.

Yes. Bogs and farming equipment.

I read one of his poems once. I think it was about a frog, or something.
