What does "no personality" mean?

this might be really stupid but i keep seeing things on here like "no personality", but i don't understand how someone can have "no" personality... i mean everyone has a personality.. some people are just quiet or vacuous or whatever... but that's their personality. i mean there was this quiet person at my old school, who never talked, people said they had "no personality"... i felt a bit bad for them but never in any of their classes or anything... so at college i did have them in one of my classes when i moved there, and made an effort to talk to them because they looked a bit lost, and she's now one of my closest friends (and my friends have forgotten about the whole "no personality" comments) and definitely has a personality..

does "no personality" just basically mean quiet and shy? because i don't see that that's going to build their confidence...

I guess people use it as a descriptive way of explaining what that person is like e.g. the loud one, the flirty one etc. Just means nothing in particular really comes across. Usually just have to try a little harder with these people.

People who have 'no personality' just tend to imitate other people's views, opinions and style and not really think for themselves... Talk inanely about things of little significance with little enthusiasm :dontknow: Not really sure to be honest... I've heard of some people substituting their lack of personality with interesting clothes or props. Seems weird :erm:

e.g. "Hi, I'm Emily, look at my coat. Isn't it a nice coat. It's red, and whenever people think about me they think about my red coat because I always wear my red coat..."

It's a slightly harsher way of saying "Nice, but a bit dull".

You have nothing witty/interesting to say.

When people are like everyone else, but when you get them on their own there's no spark or interesting thing about them. They can't think of a thing to say and it's not because they're desperately shy or anything. They haven't got any interests, don't think for themselves, can't really name any books or films or music they like...just boring!

boring

This. I'd rather be called boring TBH, "no personality" is patronizing. Yes, I do have a personality, it's just not one you like.

It means they base their views/opinions on others, i.e. they can't think of anything for themselves. Or they're just boring.

When a person has nothing interesting to say or anything fairly interesting about them. They don't have anything to talk about and tend to talk about nothing a lot. Sometimes people are quiet but sometimes, people are just boring. :/

theyre probably still trying to work out what "craic" means to be honest

A person with 'no personality' doesnt mean youre a blank sheet of paper, it just means that the accuser has yet to discover who you are, or you dont have very obvious traits (such as being a nerd or very funny)... nobody has 'more personality' than another..

When people have no interests or opinions, and don't know about or do anything interesting.

Some people can appear to have no personality when they actually do but just aren't talkative. And some people can talk about crap but still have no personality.

I would say that it meant that they had no personality in the sense that they had no original thought, or ideas or views of their own...

Being quiet or shy isn't really that much to do with it, obviously it make it harder to see the 'real' them, but only for extroverted people. Introverted people tend to be better judges of people...

Watch the Inbetweeners episode where they go on that double date. That elephantine girl who gets rejected by Will is an example of someone with no personality. Not necessarily quiet, but instead typically someone with nothing interesting to say or do; nothing which separates them from the crowd.
