Putting on weight at uni...

The thing I was so afraid of is starting to happen! Since I got to uni I have put on about 6lbs. That doesn't sound like very much, but it's a pound a week, and I'd like to nip it in the bud as soon as possible!

I think the problem is that although I'm eating decent food, it's not all low fat. I'm eating quite a lot of fruit and veg, for example, but also loads of red meat, and I'm drinking quite a lot of alcohol.

What can I cook that's cheap, nutritious, low in fat, and will actually fill me up? I find fruit really expensive. It's cheaper to buy chocolate.

Lol, I know what you mean. I think I've put weight on since starting uni. Really don't want to weigh myself and find out how much though!
enjoy it while it lasts, when i first started uni i was living the high life buying expensive food, and all that jazz....wait for xmas to happen, you'll be skint after that and wont be able to afford anything, so it'll just be a diet of toast and cereal, or something equally as un-nutritious, every day. you'll soon lose whatever weight you might have put on.
well thats what happened to me anyway...

baked potatoes with low fat toppings....pasta with pesto......soup......you could buy one those cookery books aimed at students if you really wanted to impress people :p:
I can cook loads of really nice stuff......it's just a bit fattening!
the alcohol will be an issue, cut that back, it can mess up your metabolism a bit i think, and i know what you mean, fruit is expensive where bad stuff isnt. Maybe you just need to hit the gym more rather than changing your diet
I have a gym membership, so there's really no reason why I shouldn't. The problem is, I live quite far away from the gym, so it's always a huge effort to go there!

Instead of being really drastic about it you could just try and tip the balance between exercise and diet a bit.
Get off the bus a stop early and just try and cut down on the stuff you liie eating instead of cutting it out.
I'm being a bit hypocritical though..I love food and am no good at the willpower thing!

I think vegetable stir frys are fairly cal. just use olive oil, not vegetable oil when you make them. you can get them allready made in tescos, you just have to put them in the frying pan for about 5 mins, i think theyre about 200cal a serving, but i find the servings to be a bit small, but even the whole pack is around 400cal. about £1.70 i think.

eat salad, try chicken salad, pasta salad, etc. kraft do low cal dressings, and theyre really nice!

i try not to eat bread, and when i do i eat wholemeal. i dont eat that much dairy, (unless you count chocolate  ) i have milk with cereal in the morning, but i dont have milk with tea or coffee. dont totally cut out dairy though, you do need it for calcium.

make sure you drink plenty of water, about 2 ltrs a day is the recommended amount i think. its great for your skin, and i think it helps speed up your metabolism, or with digestion i think.

lean meats like chicken breasts, fish, lean pork and plenty of fruit n veg. try to eat smaller, more frequent meals and drinking lots of water is a must.

portion size! cut it down! in my first year at uni i was eating big portions, mainly cos i misjudged how much i needed to cook. that, in combination with alcohol and not that much exercise, resulted in a total weight gain of 10lbs! crazy!

i have lost 7lbs of that over the summer, and since being back at uni i am eating smaller portions so the samething doesnt happen, and i havent put on a single pound yet in 8 weeks!

I have the exact opposite problem - I've apparently lost weight in the last 8 weeks. Given I was only a little over 9 stone anyway that's not good.
well ever since I started uni I lost like 10kg (not joking ) but then again i workout everday for 20-30mins so that might explain it lol, my diet was very different at home , I was always bursting full after a meal , but at uni its like "nice full" lol , just go jogging or something trust me u would lose it in like days , even just starting with 10mins of jogging everyday can really help , i bet u well lose soo much weight.I know loads of ppl who eat junk food , but just go to the gym and work it off. So dont think eating meat etc is that bad.

Yeah I've lost weight since starting uni, primarily due to the fact I'm too stingey to buy lots of food and have been walking for an hour back and forth from the main campus.

I've put on sooo much weight at uni, it's quite awful.

It's odd because I've dropped a waist size, but the scales show I've put on weight.

My mum thinks I lost weight. There again, I think she just wanted to fatten me up.
