can you change durham college?

so i got an offer from durham for biology, but i havent received a college yet. i applied for van mildert, however i never really looked into the colleges (shame on me), and am really liking others such as collingwood.

is van mildert any good?

i was wondering whether it is possible to put in an inquiry to change preference of college? thankss

You can ask but by now it's almost 100% certain that Collingwood will be full for Biologists (near the science site and a big, sporty, popular college).

It's pretty hard to change unless you have a reason (or you ask in November or something). But if you get in and don't like Mildert after the open day, you can ask around other colleges to see if any have spaces.

Yes, Van Mildert is great. Collingwood is also great. All the colleges are great.

Collingwood and Van Mildert are relatively similar in many ways, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes you can. I originally applied to University College but was offered a place at Cuths. Although Cuths is a great college, I knew very little about it as I had looked around University College (Castle) and really felt that it was the place for me. Anyways I contacted the college office by phone, and wrote a letter to the senior tutor explaining how keen I was to be at Castle and what I had to contribute, and I was given a place. So basically, ask and you (may) receive.

*EDIT*

This is now very outdated, they no longer let you change college based on preference.

**EDIT**

This is now even more outdated as college allocations are now automated and done on a lottery basis.

I don't think they will be full, offers have been given out but who knows how many people will make their offers or not, there is definitely at least some flexibility still.
In my case, I had originally applied to Castle and been pooled to Cuth's, so I contact the college office at Castle by email and wrote quite a lengthy letter detailing why I wanted to go to Castle and what I had to offer. Cuth's is a great college though, be careful not to bad mouth another college or sound negative.
I hope this helps.

Can I ask when you did this, since it seems unlikely that this would have happened under the policy adopted in the current admissions cycle of only allowing transfers between colleges on grounds of genuine need rather than preference? If this happened last year, we're in a different ball game now.

When I asked to change today they mentioned they no longer did it based on preference.

You're right it wasn't this year, there could well have been a change then I guess, obviously put some thought into the reasons that you are requesting a transfer. If you think there is a need for you to change college then at least try.

If anyone is looking to see if you can get your college changed you cannot. It's all done by a lottery system. What you get you are stuck with. I phoned Durham up and said that a college change could only occur for medical reasons. Hope this clears any doubts!

But what if I was allocated to a college and my friend to another, and we both wanted to change, could we swap? In this case we are both applying for the same subject, are from the same country etc

It would be an administrative nightmare if everyone tried to swop around. From what I can gather pretty much everyone settles into the college they get allocated into.

The post you are referring to is from 2011. The allocation systems have changed since then. It is not individual colleges that select students - it is done by computer.

Unless you have genuine medical grounds (with evidence) or are not planning on living in, it is extremely unlikely that you will be able to change your allocation.

Van Mildert is a great college and please note that whatever misgivings students have about college allocations they are usually very happy once at Durham and wouldn't change colleges if given the chance.
Good luck.
Have you been to Van Mildert?
