Kent's Medway Campus

Hello!

I've been given an offer for Kent, in which I was excited about it.. until I just realised that my course is set to be in Medway campus. I know it's kind of my fault for not researching thoroughly.

So what I'm asking here is, Can anyone tell me how different it is compared to the main Campus in Canterbury? I have a feeling it's not as fun and, not trying to sound mean but sharing campus with Greenwich and Canterbury Christ? :frown:

Opinions away!

I'm at Medway. It's not great... Although the library is actually really good!

Your experience here will really depend on what course you're doing. The art subjects have been given a lot more funding and we've been given access to a couple of new buildings, plus they will be building a big new arts building with loads of facilities just for us. It's definitely an 'up and coming' campus.

Sharing the campus has advantages and disadvantages. As I said, the library is really good because of all the combined funding, and there are a few places to eat on campus. The thing is though, as a Kent student, you're unlikely be going into non-Kent buildings unless you're studying Pharmacy. I think one of the Canterbury Christchurch buildings has a Costa Coffee although I might be wrong. The only interaction you'll have with the other unis is through socities and in Coopers or in the places to eat, the shop or the library. Unless you TRY to speak to other unis, you won't have any direct interaction with them.

The Kent halls are OK too, although a bit expensive. Last year they were £100 for an ensuite, self-catered room. This year they're £103.50 and next they'll be about £121.50 per week. They're about a 10/15 minute walk to campus/the library but you're bound to come across loads of people walking the same way so it goes a bit quicker. There are also some studios which are around £130 per week. The halls are on top of a Tesco, Dominos and Subway, and also a secured car park so you can bring your car.

Accommodation around campus is actually really cheap. I'm in a single room, with bills, internet and Sky TV included and it's £290 a month.

Nightlife is...erm...limited. There's not much going on around here. There is a cinema and some restaurants and shops about 5-10 mins from campus, but unless you have a car or you're willing to rely on buses it's quite hard to get around Medway.

The differences between Canterbruy and Medway is that at Cants there is a LOT more choice of accommodation, of societies, things to do on campus and around campus and a much bigger campus. Medway is smaller which some people quite like. Canterbury has already distinguished itself as a good place to be, but Medway is still in the process of doing so. It's closer to London though which is a plus. Also, Greenwich have a coach that takes you to Avery Hill or Greenwich for £1 each way so getting to London works out cheaper

The price of accommodation at liberty quays for self-catered standard en-suit has gone up to £121.50 per week. Considering renting a room off campus since its probably going to be cheaper.
Medway is DISGUSTING.

Oh yes, you're right, it is £121.50 a week. Absolutely mental. That's almost twice as much as what I'm paying!

My boyfriend's studying in Medway this year and has this to say

Tell them yeah, it's not as nice at all, but the facilities are still really good and the nightlife is great
and it's more like a university in itself with greenwich and CC rather than being a part of Kent

It probably depends what you're after. If your social life benfits well from pub crawls and such, then Medway'll be just fine. Very lacking on societies though, and the accommodation is literally just a block of flats by a main road. It's lovely inside though, nicer than the Parkwood ensuites on the Canterbury campus.

What course are you studying?
Oh dear, sounds like im in trouble then lols.

I'll be studying IT, but damn.. if it's more like being a part of Greenwich / CC, then that's definitely not what I'm looking for. :frown: Maybe i'll try and move course from IT to CS.. oh wells.

I'm studying Social Sciences, what you planning to study?

Erm for me, coming from London was a big change, I didn't expect it to be like that. Though there is some nice places of Medway, as in they have the chatham dockyard down the A road, near the university that has a cinema, and various restaurants. At first it wasn't bad, but the problem of Medway is that during the week you have a lot of parties taking place and at the weekend it seems like a ghost town. Most people leave to go home as they either live in London, or down the South coast. The area is quite run down compared to where you will be staying and where the lectures will be hold. Though your sharing campuses with Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church, you hardly ever meet in contact unless during Freshers week were you may make a new friend from there.
I kinda like it here, as it does quiet and sometimes you need a quiet environment. And I've made a big circle of very close friends, so we make it fun. Though I still would love to have gone to a much better University. The good thing that may be changing now is that near Liberty Quays their building something called the 'Victory Pier', it will be summed up with flats and hotels there, as well as bars, clubs, restaurants and a gym. So that may be a plus in coming to Medway from September 2011. There tends to be a lack in nightlife, as you just go to same places all the time. But it does depend what music interests you. If your more of contemporary music, then the bars and clubs around here are ideal, if you more Dub-step or funky house there is a limited amount here. There are various nights held in the student bar, Tuesday is more for rock/indie music, Wednesday is a themed day or sports day usually, Thursday people head to Rochester for a 3 floor club called Casino's. Friday is when everything goes quiet. Recently we've had people in Liberty organize night outs on Mondays, so there has been trips to Canterbury, Bedfordshire/Luton, and various trips to London, including Tiger Tiger and Fabric. But the difference between here and Canterbury is that in Canterbury there's a big student population, so there has to be more offered. In terms of societies, night life, accommodation. There are a limited amount of societies around here but you could always invent one yourself with the reassurance that you'd have people to join. Then again if you can pass your licence and get a car before you come it is very ideal for you. As buses around here are very limited, and expensive. You'd come to realize that every time you have to go into Chatham or something thats about 5 quid out your pocket each time. Having a car makes it so much more useful to travel around.
Now personally, I would advise against coming to Medway, as you deserve a better student life. But if your one of the quiet ones or less partying more education then it's right for you. If I had the chance to leave and switch uni's I'd be first on that list, and I'm sure the list will just continue. Above all that, Medway is a nice place, Rochester the river i think? is beautiful, not much of green space around here, as it is all built up, but the area of Medway consisting of 7 towns, is going under a major redevelopment. I suggest visit Medway, after the tour see the area for yourself. Because listening to people like us may be biased.
