Each case is different. But a bit from column A and a bit from column B.

no way is that attention seeking maybe in some cases its a desparate cry for help, i hate really do hate the idea of anyone takin something sharp to there own skin and slicing it,

maybe showing them is a way of sayng look i can;t tell you but please help me!!
people don't talk about it everyday and its not an easy thing to admit to either i think it is rather worrying!!

Sometimes it can be attention seeking.

But sometimes it's just a part of accepting who you are and not trying to hide that because you're not ashamed of it. I saw this one girl at a concert and her arms were covered in scars but she was embarrassed about them. She wasn't attention seeking, she was just showing that that is her life. I can't really explain it well though.

I would say they want people to see they are hurting.....they dont really want to do it...but dont know how else to deal with the situation.

But if it's a cry for help it's still seeking attention, although a different kind of attention to what "attention seeking" normally suggests.

yer indeed i was thinking where they doing it purely for the hell of it and to seek attention of anytone who would care so they can be the centre of attention i know someone who done that, tried everything to help her then she admitted it, today i have no respect to that person

but then again if someone was genuinly harming themselves, then showing it it isn;t really the same like you say,
people hide these things and let them get worse and then don;t know how to control themselves maybe showing it is a blessing in disguise so at least they can try to get help!!

Of course its attention seeking in a sense, but attention seeking seems harsh so calling it a cry for help would be better
But no matter why people do it, it still should be seen as a cry for help, not as "Oh shes just a attention seeking bitch"....
Because even if somebody is just doing it for the hell of it, thats still them needing help because to do that just for the hell of it to get abit of attention means they clearly are insecure about themselves.
If you self harm and do it because you can't help it, not because it's 'fashionable' then you will go to any lengths to hide the scars.

Those who show the scars are probably doing it because it's 'cool' or whatever.Pretty pathetic if you ask me(and I'm an ex-self harmer...).

This is the problem you see, are you basing this on the fact you know people who show there scars then when you ask why they did it they say "because its the in thing and cool"
Some people just say that to hide there problems.

god i still don't know how someone can seriously see that as a way of relaiseing pain,

i used to drink loads when i was depressed!! didn;t help either!!
No, as I said before, the majority of people who actually genuinely self harm(not for attention) will go to any lengths to hide their scars (i.e. wearing jumpers in summer) as they don't want other people to know what they do.

I'm not condoning it but you kind of get a 'release' when you feel the pain and it sends hormones/chemicals rushing through you which make you feel 'good' and a person can become addicted to this.

See this is where people slip up, now yeah your right alot of genuine self harmers who have problems will try and hide there scars,
but however some dont so to say ALL genuine self harmers hide there scars is a theory you could slip up on if somebody showed there scars (as a cry for help which some do)

FFS I didn't say all self harmers do it because they are cool.I said that those who show it are generally doing it because it's cool.

I used to self harm. I didn't do it because it was 'cool'. I used to wear denim jackets on holiday and jumpers in summer just to hide my scars.

Did I say ALL self harmers? No.I said 'the majority'...that is not all.By the majority...I mean in my experience.

I like it when attention seekers say that they have had 'X' ammount of failed suicide attempts, how stupid can you be as to not be able to take your own life?

If you take an overdose and you get found in time....

I don't think it's fair to start calling people stupid for not being able to take your own life. A lot of people do 'attempt suicide' knowing full bloody well it won't work, just as a cry for help.

ok then; im a self harmer and i show it. i dont show it because it's cool. i show it because (mostly) i dont care what other people think, pathetic or not. It is also on some occasions the only way I can show people how extreme my feelings are since I don't know how to put it into words. So say i am an exception, say most people do do it because it's cool. they still have issues and i think under no circumstances should pathetic be used to label them.
