Dairy products, stuff like Quorn, eggs...etc
vegetables contain protein too...
nuts, pulses (lentils, kidney beans etc.), eggs, cheese, milk, fish if you're going to eat fish....

you should get a book, even from the library.
i did and you get a whole list of what you need and what contains it.
You need to get a good balance of amino acids when considering protein intake - vegetable sources of protein tend to be weak in certain essential amino acids, which need to be complemented by intake of other foodstuffs. Remember that we are evolved omnivores so long-term vegitarianism is an unnatural state for our bodies so you need to take steps to counteract that in your dietry intake.

Yeah, I s'pose that's right. And I do eat fish- the only things I don't eat are meat.

why are you a vegetarian?

I am a vegetarian because I want a challenge and also I don't like beef or gammon and I don't think it's humane- however, if it really is bad for you, then I s'pose I should probably at least eat chicken which of course wouldn't make me a veggie.

I mostly hear about nuts having protein but I think Quorn has the general good stuff in it that meat has. Fish is pretty good for you though, gives you good skin I hear.

So you aren't an actual vegitarian then. I can only repeat what I was taught on my dietary biochemistry course (or at least what I remember ).

I am a veggie, but have been told that I should eat some form of protein- what foods do you find protein in that's not meat??

Rich, there is an important protein that you have to get from meats and only meats I believe contain them. Almost all non-veggies get them some way or another but for you you will have to go to boots and buy this supplement.

This has a great amount on the nutritional aspect for you if you wish to read this.

Hope you like my help, Daibhidh

Thanks, and (to another comment), you can eat fish- it makes you a pescatarian which is a variant of a veggie- it's called a Lacto-ovo-pesco vegetarian and that is what I am. I am gonna buy the Vitamin B12 from boots which you can only get in meat eggs and milk (i do eat dairy stuff) but just to be on the safe side, but that's the only thing I think.

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm?? Well, yes, strictly speaking pesco-vegetarians really aren't veggies, but i'll give up fish soon. though there are SO many good things that fish does for you which includes a variety of vitamins and stuff and it does very little that's unhealthy for you- and it's so nice aswell. BUT, i will give it up soon.

why give it up? why not just east meat as well? what is the point in living completely off vegetables, it is completely unnatural and unhealthy too....

I feel better since I've turned vegetarian than I ever did before. If it was unnatural and unhealthy then everyone who was veggie would be ill! It's easy to get a healthy balanced diet without meat.

A lot of the unnecessary flaming about Veggie health is unjustified assertion and quite frankly a load of rubbish.

Its also quite difficult to accept a lot of the flaming arguments about "natural evolution": given that we live in a civilised society in the 21st century and not in the stone age; and given our evolutionary chain (not that that has any bearing on anything).

Supplements may help (as they might help meat eaters), but they are not necessary to live very healthily indeed as a vegi. Indeed, Vegis live longer (in the US certainly), so it cant be that bad for you! I take no supplements whatsoever, and am one of the most in-shape, energetic and just all round healthy people I know; and there are many in the same position.

Well that is peculiar. You don't think its humane, yet would choose to eat chicken, the domesticated animal with the lowest animal welfare of all. The fact that the average chicken lives its 40 day life on legs that aren't strong enough to hold it up in a barn filled with 8000 of its mates, whilst it burns its feet on the acidic litter it spends it miserable existence in has no effect on you does it?

And i bet you drink milk as well. Milk which has come from a cow whose calf was taken from it at less than an hour old (in the case of many male dairy calves to be shot). The cow then produces up to 50kg of milk per day (thats like walking about with a large sack of potatoes between your legs) whilst losing weight because it can't eat fast enough to supply its own energy needs. It has been calculated that the only people who work harder than modern dairy cows are cyclists on the tour de france.

I do think it particularly ridiculous when people are vegetarian on moral/animal welfare grounds but still think that chicken, eggs and milk are ok to consume when this clearly contradicts their reasons for choosing such a diet, especially when it is these animals which are most exploited.

Please don't take this as a personal attack, its just something i feel strongly about. gt

That's fine- all opinions are valid. Well, I don't eat chicken- and I've decided to give up fish aswell- fish on moral grounds as I've seen fish been killed and red meat on health reasons and the rest because it's hipocritical to eat some and not others.
