which I thought was borderline ******ed but out of curiosity, what does the Great British public deem as the most respectable profession (out of the 2 of course) ?

I personally respect Doctors (and Engineers) more than Lawyers

Aren't lawyers just seen as money grabbing?
I think Drs are generally more highly regarded because they're helping society rather than taking money from poor unsuspecting people and charging extortionate fees (this isn't my view lol)

Society in general would say Doctors.
I'm not sure I respect Lawyers more per se, but I would rather be a Lawyer than a Doctor.

Doctors, of course.
The law is a (rightly) well regarded profession but no more so than stockbroking, accountancy, architecture, or any number of other jobs.

I don't think there's any contest, easily doctors. Even ignoring the negative perceptions associated with lawyers, nothing comes close to saving lives.
Put a poll if you're not convinced

Well, doctors ought to be more respected as they help save lives and counsel us on matters relating to health. I myself dream to be a lawyer but I am not so naive as to say 'lawyers' as it is clearly manifest that everyone owes and astronomical debt to DOCTORS

Doctors obviously, why would you ever respect a lawyer, perhaps with the exception of human rights lawyers, but even then its questionable whether they would still fight for human rights if we more than halved their paycheque!

NOTE: quite a high number of barristers practising criminal law are significantly poorer than the average doctor. Certain civil law barristers -- namely tax and company -- do earn a pathetic amount though; the same can be said about bankers.
