when it doesnt have any lipids or carbs to use, it uses amino acids instead as the respiratory substrate. Which ranges from 0.5 to 0.8 depending on the amino acid. This normally occurs during times of starvation. hope it helps!

Well the standard values we were given were:
    carbohydrate 1.0
    protein 0.9
    fat 0.7

I thought it might be looking for some other reason aside from different respiratory substrates...?

No, it's not that - anaerobic respiration has an RQ higher than 1.0 because amount of CO2 produced exceeds amount of O2 used.

Ketogeneis (i.e diabetes mellitus). RQ is less than 0.7 as the patient becomes more acidotic.

    Ok ...

Could I mention plants at all? Their RQ could be lower because the CO2 is used in photosynthesis...?

According to the markscheme the "correct" answer (and the only correct answer  ) was the photosynthesis thing.
