Sets depend on your work and attitude throughout the year as well as your SATs results, but if you get a level 7, it would be very unusual for you not to be put in the top set, unless of course you go to some private/grammar school where everyone gets fantastic results. At my school reasonably few people got level 7s, so everyone who did was in the top set in Year 10.

If you're naturally quite talented at the subject, or else you are a hard worker, it's not that hard to get a Level 7.

i got a 7 in science, + i did the extension, i thought the extension was rly hard, but the other 2 papers were easy enough. you can only get a 7 if your doing teir C, i think...

I didn't know that extension papers still exist for the SATS!

But a good point is raised -- it's only possible to obtain a 7 if you sit the higher tier papers (5-7 or 6-8 in Mathematics and 5-7 in Science, English is single-tiered at 4-7).

Again, it pretty much depends on the school. In my school, those who achieved higher 7s in science were put into the top set to do separate sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) for GCSE. Those who achieved lower 7s and below were put into lower sets to do Double-award Science for GCSE.

Those who achieved an 8 or a 7 were put into the first four sets to do higher tier A*-C Mathematics for GCSE. Those who achieved a 6 (there weren't that many) were put into the bottom two sets to do intermediate B-E Mathematics for GCSE.

English sets were not done according to ability in my school.

Don't let what I said worry you though, it must be stressed that I go to a grammar school.

in my school geting a 7 or a high 6 meant you were able to do triple science
most people in my maths class got 7s or 8s
does anyone know the boundaries in Maths, English or Science? I am aiming/predicted 877 in that order!! I really need to know!!

Please let me know if you found that helpful
Can you get grade 8 now? The year I did my SATs (98, 99?) was the year they removed level 8, so you could only get level 7's max. When did they put them back?

I was slightly cheesed they removed level 8, I dropped only 1 mark in all the maths ones and only 4 marks in the science ones.

I was told it was in 2003 when level 8's were removed but you could still get level 8 in maths but only 7 in english and science!
er you've gotta be quite good/determined because most people your age dont care about sats and why should they really? Just do revision and if you want it you'll get it.
I care! and I am in Y9!

Yea see, I did no work at school in year 9, and still came off with 7,7,7. It isn't hard. its just like end of year exams youve probably already had before. Just do lots of those CGP practice papers, thats all the revision I did.
And it is pretty likely youll be put in the higher sets. Im not sure about yours, but in my school only about 14 people out of 180 will do anything but higher.

lol yeh same it is standard to be put in for the higher papers and only a few people will be put in for the foundation papers but only if they think they cant scrape a C at gcse coz then its not really worth ti for the school.
After doing my sats I thought i'd got 666 but came out with 777; i hardly did any work througought the whole of year 9!
In most top sets in my average school, there are about 20 level 7's in the class and then the 15 best level 6's.

Hi There,

I was wandering how hard is it to get a level 7 and what do they look for when giving level 7's in Science + English. Also, if you do get a level 7 then is it guaranteed that you will be put into the higher sets ( in an average school ).

Thanks in advance

yea a 7 is a high mark! there was a load in my school who got "7+"'s! but if your the type of person like me who wants to best at all your subjects, then just revise loads but not too much to put urself in hospital lol, but seriously, i wouldnt worry about KS3's. when i was doing them i thought they were the biggest thing! but they are the biggest load of crap! believe me, if you get say a 5 in Maths, and get put into a middle class, you can work your way up to a high class! it doesnt really matter what class your in, your teacher will know which teir to put you in for!
