help please!!! stoke bishop vs clifton.... and M.E!

Hello Bristol peeps

I really need some advice please!! I'm currently on my gap year and have a confirmed place at Bristol to start next oct to study sociology- CANT WAIT!!

anyway- I have a bit of a dilemma about accommodation...
Basically iv had M.E for past 5 years (for those of u who don’t know its basically when u have v little energy, cant do much and often cant sleep even though ur constantly tired!) im ok at the moment, and part of the reason I took a gap year is to get healthy- so my health basically goes up and down. now the dilemma is- do i go into halls in stoke bishop where theres great social life and most of the students... but a 40 min walk away (impossible when ill- but i hear there r buses) or do I go to Clifton Hill house, where there is less student life (So i hear!) and kind of cut myself off from the main halls..... my friends who are already at Bristol seem to think its awful to not be in sb...

I really don’t have a clue!! im familiar with Bristol coz my bro went there- so iv seen most of the halls.. I just don’t want to miss out by not being in stoke bishop…. Yet the walk is a real issue!

So please!! Any advice would be fantastic!!!!! Thank you!! Stoke bishop vs Clifon???

Ok right the whole being cut off in clifton thing is a myth...ok so there's not much of an inter hall community down here but people down here think that people must be MAD to want to live all the way out in stoke bishop so it works both ways..

I wouldn't say there was no life down in the town, thats a huge exaggeration. I'm sure theres a lot going on down there and there are quite alot of halls and people. Its just stoke bishop has all the halls in close proximity, which is nice but i really think it would be unfair to say we have it better socially.

I think your social life would be what you make it, what hall you are isn't the decider.

I think you should ring up the uni and ask if they are able to put you into clifton halls because of your medical condition. But only the uni will know for sure.

I can't see how they would say no, surely they have to meet your particular needs. and putting you in the clifton halls is pretty reasonable.

i'd say cliffton. i m personally in HB, and i got a 1 year bus pass which cost me 310 pounds, altho i do feel guilty occasionally when i c most of the other ppl walking, but it's fun to zoom past them *muahaha*

to say that u get cut off in cliffton isnt really true. u r closer to the bars, pubs, clus n everything else. if ur frens wanna go out to town to party, u will b able to meet them without much difficulty. as long as u mix around wif ppl from ur course i guess it's ok, n meet ppl while cooking in ur kitchen as well. i haf a fren in manor house who is doing fine social life wise.

Well now, I live in Goldney in Clifton so obviously I'm going to be biased and say CLIFTON! I mean, its only 20-25 mins away from the uni and is sooo much more convenient in terms of being near to the centre of town, etc, so you don't have to waste money (unless you're loaded/too wasted to care!) on a taxi or bus fares in general. Plus the fact its nearer to uni and all the other commodities means you'll get exercise everyday but not too much!
However, I do know a girl from Wills hall who has ME, but she's got a car- which obv helps!

Oh and regarding the whole being 'cut off' here- *******s to it! Tis NOT true at all- due to your course, various pub crawls and getting to know people through others, you meet people from LOADS of halls! I mean, I don't think I have any less friends than any of my friends who are at Stokey B!

So all in all (oh lord, too many essays!) I think it depends whether you want to walk further (and across the Downs- ARGH!- NOT good at night!)!

Hope that helps!x

I'd have to agree, having M.E would make living in Clifton much easier for you.

SB is very sociable, but so is Clifton, and you don't have the hassle of getting to and from clubs in town so much.

Most mornings when walking down in the cold/rain for 40 mins, i'd kill to live in Goldney or in clifton in general

If the walk is going to be a problem, definitely apply for Clifton. I live in Stoke Bishop and it's great, but all the halls are lively and sociable.

The walk is 1/2 an hour at most really, some people just walk slowly.

It does get a bit irritating when you get absolutely soaked while walking up hill for half an hour after a day of lectures I must admit.

However, on the whole I would say that the best option is to look round a view halls and see which you like best, you will enjoy wherever you end up. The social life vs distance debate is fairly irrelevant really, you will ever meet everyone in halls, let alone in stoke bishop, and if you dont feel like walking, take a bus or find a friend with a car.

Apply to the Hawthorns. If I had my time again I would. Two minute walk to lectures... it takes me longer to lock my bike up.

Thanks everyone for the advice!!! It’s all really helpful!! I think im going to come visit Bristol halls... but its looking like Clifton- especially if your not cut off like rumour had it!!! thanks again! Cant wait till next year!

apply to the hawthorns or woodland court if you want to be near. clifton isnt really that much closer to uni than stoke bishop, and its up a mighty hills so if your not fit you will sturggle from either. Dont apply to stoke bishop because the walk is 2 miles, and no theres no a good reliable bus service, well there is occasionally but you will still have to walk for around 10 to 15 minutes when you leave the bus, and 10 minutes to get to the bus! plus a signle journey is 2 pounds, and in mornings or later on at night they dont stop that close to halls. my advice would be woodland court, expensive but right outside uni and modern too!

Clifton really is a great deal closer to the uni than stoke bishop - it's only about 5 minutes from the Triangle! I think it's a good balance between location and social life, in between Stoke Bishop and student houses on the scale. However, it's true that Clifton halls are up a hill (only for 2 minutes, but it is quite steep), so if that's a problem then a lot of the student houses are just a flat walk to lectures. However, it has to be said that Bristol is a hilly and very spread out city, so you will probably be doing a fair bit of walking compared to a campus university.

i'm really suprised they can't organise a decent bus service, considering its just one route and about (1500?) people needing to get from A to B every single day.

Bit pathetic.

yea wud be gud if they could wudnt it! spesh on those rainy days, i wud say bristols not well cut out for anyone with a disability really

I agree. The walk is ok when it's dry and light, but at the moment I'm having a problem between about 4 and 6:30, when it's dark and there is no union bus. Feel quite scared walking to the bus stop in the dark on my own. :frown:

Clifton is a LOT closer to the uni than stoke bishop - i am a music student and i live at most 7 minutes from my department. and i would say that you can easily make it to most of the departments in 15 minutes. plus the town centre is very close, not forgetting clifton village itself with a huge collection of quality pubs and restaurants!! the only far away place is broadmead, which is about a 20 - 25 minute walk.
Personally, i think the social life here in CHH is absolutely brilliant, the JCR is great, the bar prices are incredibly low, and the people in stoke bishop must all be mad as badgers.

Edit: plus, you dont actually have to walk up to a huge hill to CHH. You can do, if you want to, but you dont have to - and its actually a shorter walk to the majority of the departments!! There is a blatant shortcut which is for the most part flat. Brill!!

ok- time to banish the myths once and for all: I'm in Sinclair House which i know is a bit of a s h i t hole, but I know people from Manor, Clifton Hill, Goldney, Churchill, Wills, HB... so at least my social life isn't suffering, and it's rubbish that the atmosphere in s b is any better than in Clifton! Also- the hill! I don't know whether anyone in Clifton has actually realised this yet but you don't actually have to walk up or down lower clifton hill... from CHH/Goldney, start to go down the hill but first go up some steps on the left before you get to Manor Hall driveway that will take you past Sinclair House onto York Place and then head right onto the triangle that way. It takes me 10 minutes to get to/from my department which is in the centre of the precinct. Seriously... why would anyone choose that hill? Choose clifton, it's amazing!

Reply 17

Yeah, i know about the short cut, its great - but you don't even have to climb those huge steps!! you can just go up the tiny pathway right in front of CHH and round the back of sinclair house, brings you right to the YorkCafe!!
So no hill and no steps!
