contact lenses

I have got some hard contact lenses at my opticians, I have been to practice with them 3 times now, I can easily get them in but find it impossible to get them out. I have to pull the corner of my eye whilst trying to keep it wide enough so if I blink my upper eyelid would go under the lens and flick it out. The only other method for this type of lens is a suction device which I dont really want to have to use so does anyone have andy tips or advice for me?
thanks

Maybe you're not opening your eye enough? With one hand, pull your top eye lid open (as if you're resting your arm on top of your head) then with the other hand use middle finger to kinda pull your bottm lid down and then use your index finger and thumb to gently pinch either side of the lense and it'll come out.

Hmmmm just read that through and I'm not sure if I make sense

I had this problem with my hard ones (on soft ones now) - the opticians hav an annnoying tendency to only teach you one method and insist it's the only way, whereas in fact there are several safe ways of takign them out.
The method I found worked was to pull both lids apart, then try to get the top lid under the top of the lens, which should flip it out.
Hope this works, good luck!

EDIT: Or it could be that your eye is too dry so it's harder to remove. Do you wear them a long time?

Can you wear soft lenses? They are much easier and much more comfortable

To get them out you just have to squeeze them and they pop out.

I don't know anyone who has hard lenses, they're all soft- so do hard ones correct a particular type of problem?
I find mine (soft) quite difficult to get out, but being soft you can sort of pick them off your eye when they roll up- they tend to fall out anyway when they start to crease up. Not sure how I'd go about removing hard ones....

hey

i have hard lenses wot i do it look straight wide eyed and then i get my index finger and pull my eye lids together and they pop out!!

Dus anyone's eyes go red in the cold weather?

i wear hard lenses and they do take a bit of practice.

I look into a mirror, using one hand to open my top lid as far as possible, and the middle finger on my other hand to open the bottom lid wide. The lens should be on the index finger of the hand opening the bottom lid, so that you can just place it gently on the pupil.

just put your finger on the actual lense and slide it towards the side then you can easily just pick it out from the side, if you get me.

That method you described is for soft lenses. With hard or gas-permeable lenses, you'd damage your eyes by touching the lenses to get them out, since they're not flexible enough.

Ask your opticians if you can practise the technique with soft lenses first then re-try with the rigid lense, soft lenses are easier to get out so much easier to learn with! Don't try sliding the rigid contact lense to the side as the rigid lense is shaped for the middle of the eye not the edge.
Sorry I work in an optician and teach some contact lense wearers

It takes a while to get upto optimum speed taking your lenses in and out. After using my lenses for about 3 weeks I could consistantly get them in and out within 10 seconds.

Its all a case of practise Im afraid. I have soft contact lenses, and even though they are ment to be easier, It took me alot of practise before I got it just right. Talk to your optician and ask them to show you another way to take them out, or for them to go through it slowly, step by step. Im another person who works in an opticians and Im sure that if you ask they will be able to give you some more advice. You'l get them out eventually, it just takes practise.

thanx for the advice its just annoying because atm it feels like i'll never get them out - my optician says its a knack so hopefully i'll get it soon!

I often do your method with corner eye thing, not recommeded though my contacts actually tore on a few occasions, go back and talk it out with your optician.

One thing i still dont understand how the hell do you tell if your contacts the right way around, I vaguely remember something about putting the contact in your palm and folding it?

ok i have soft lenses, and i squeeze them out using my top and bottom lid rather than using my fingers to pinch it out like the opticians taught me. im not sure if it works with the hard ones though but you could try it:s-smilie:

I can't do any of that sliding stuff. I wear soft ones and the only way I can get them out is to put two fingers on my eye and squeeze, it breaks the suction and they come out.

To see if it's the right way around I just look at them really carefully on my finger and check if the sides are curved upwards like half a tennis ball, rather than having a rim that slightly juts outwards.

How do you know whether you have to wear 'hard' contacts? My eyesight is pretty bad, my diopeters are about -5.0 or -5.5. I still wear the normal softlens contacts but find I can't see very well from some distances (say about 7 feet distance).

xanthe, next time you go get your eyes cheked ask them. its optitions who usually decide whether you need hard or soft contact lenses. maby yours aint bad enough to have hard.

i have to wear hard ones due to some stupid condition called astigmatism. this is where the pupil starts to turn into more of a rugby ball shape. in this case soft contact lenses wont work as they wont sit on the eye correctly. hard contact lenses push against the eye to make the lense fit which makes you see better. well me anyway.

i havent heard of any other reasons to get hard contact lenses. if anyone else wears hard contacts for any other reason it would be nice to know.

oh and hard contacts are a right pain in the butt!

and and as for taking them out, theres a ridge along the bottom of your eyelid which can be used to push under the contact. easiest way i know of.
