Sounds quite interesting, if a little pricy. I'm not sure but I think the BTCV and National Trust offer similar international holidays for a lot less.

Try http://shop.btcv.org.uk/shop/level1/8/level and http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-holidays.htm
thanks, yea they sound pretty good, i like the btcv one in iceland. thankyou for those links:smile:

heya

im goin with bses to svalbard this winter. its gonna be freeezin. im going there for 3 month tho - it is actually more cost effective thatn 1 month in greenland  but i know ppl who have been to greenland and loved it.

dont worry about the money - if you have 2 years then thats loads a time.

go for it!!!! if u need any help with bses or anything else just PM me
The prices at those links are amazing! But do they include as much as gapyear.com do (e.g. travel, food)?

From what I can see they don't include flights. :frown:

volunteering stuff generally does not include flights but does include food. obviously youd have to confirm this with em.
They look so good!

Damn this frugal student budget!

You better post us pics if you do, I don't know anyone who's actually been there  How different, and innovative  Go you

yeah, I am applying for that greenland expedition in 2006! From the www.bses.org.uk site though, it says it is £2550 which seems odd as its out £3000 on that link that you've got - anyone know why that is?
550 quid for flights wasn't it?

I'm not a big fan of these mega organised gap year trips that cost you loads and show no initiative so hope that people use the BTCV and National Trust instead if possible. I suppose expeditions are a bit different, but unfortunately you tend to see gap year projects being of little or no use to the local community.

This particular expedition to greenland though is involved in research on climate change - people on the expedition help out with measuring glacial drift and the rate of melting and all that, so it is of use to the community. Though I agree with you, most organised gap year things don't really help out with the community. This particular greenland one though, does.
Sure, I didn't mean it as a personal attack by any means!

I was just reading an article about gap year projects and the astronomical prices and pointlessness of most of the companies is outrageous.
